Hello Bear‘s fun, charming brand of powerpop-rock is sure to have you smiling from ear to ear and their brand new EP ‘I Don’t Know…It’s Fun Though, Isn’t It?’ is their most essential listening yet. The Norwich band combine influences from all sorts of punk and alternative rock bands like Weezer, Descendents and Pavement, but their sound remains unique and fresh. We got Hello Bear to run through the EP and give an overview of each track to give us an insight to their songwriting and production.
01.) WE HELD HANDS ONCE, BUT THEN SHE GOT EMBARRASSED
I suppose you could say this song is a saccharin view of that kind of all-consuming modern love. The lines of infatuation, sexual desire and love getting blurred together and producing a rather “over the top” and self-possessed view of relationships.
02.) MMM, CHEQUE PLEASE!
This song is metaphoric; writing about a girl you like. How you build things up in your head when you keep them between you, the pen and the page and don’t actually let the person know how you feel. Things escalate and heighten in your mind and become far more grandiose and you infer the other person feels the same, when you kind of know that they don’t.
03.) DIRTY WEEKEND
This song is about being on the outside of the cool kids group and just making the most of socially awkward and awful situations. Recounting the night before to your other friends who are even more uncool than you, but making it sound like a successful evening.
04.) ATTACK HUG
This is a song about how you form the best kinds of friendships out of the most unlikely of people. Wonderful, whimsical and wild people that make you a better person for knowing them. The kind of person that makes everything feel like an adventure.
‘I Don’t Know…It’s Fun Though, Isn’t It?’ is out on November 11th and you can download the first single ‘We Held Hands Once, But Then She Got Embarrassed’ iTunes (here).
