This year’s Red Bull Bedroom Jam final 8 bands have just wrapped up what to most bands would be a once in a life-time experience: performing a set at Donington’s Download Festival. Along with a set at Slam Dunk a few weeks prior, we got in touch with Exeter’s I Divide to talk about their experiences so far and what they’ve got planned very soon:
DP!: First off, congratulations on making it through to the festival tour stage of the RBBJ. How does it feel to have made it this far?
ID: Thanks so much. We’re literally living on top of the moon at the moment. I personally haven’t stopped smiling. I think I’m starting to annoy everyone I know now as I haven’t stopped talking about it for weeks, but I honestly couldn’t be happier right now. The opportunities this competition gives are life changing. We’re finding it hard to find the time to tell people about all the amazing things we’ve done so far at Slam Dunk and Download because they were both just jam packed with such incredible times. The crowds we’ve had at both were incredibly massive and the reaction we’ve had has been mind blowing, so we just want to thank everyone who’s made the effort to come and watch us. You’re all incredible.
DP!: Could you please tell us where you guys are from and how the band came together?
ID: We formed from the ashes of a number of local bands from the South West. We all started talking to each other and realised that we all had the commitment and passion to really put 100% into this little dream of ours. The last few years have been incredibly hard, but now that we’re starting to see some of the benefits, it’s all becoming worth it. We have has such a good reaction from our debut CD ‘What’s Worth More’ over the last year and it’s insane to think we’ve played those songs in front of over 1000 people at Download. It’s making me get goosebumps just thinking about it.
DP!: What’s the story behind the name of the band?
ID: We don’t really have a story (although, we tend to make up different stories each time to try and make it a little more interesting). I don’t want to have to make up a new one now as my brain is tired from Download… ah, what the hell. The name came from when we were all very young. We were traveling through the great lost jungle of Tahooey when all of a sudden Tom slipped and fell down a deep dark hole. As we climbed down to find him, he was stood staring at a frozen caveman. We carried the frozen gentleman back to our camp and defrosted him in front of a fire. We asked the man “what is your name?”. The man looked at us and said “I… Divide”. It turns out that the guy actually said “I David”, but his tongue was still a little frozen at the time, but oh well. How’s that?
DP!: As a still relatively unknown band, a lot of people reading this may not have heard your music yet. How would you best describe your sound and style?
ID: We’re hard-hitting, fast paced, energetic rock with the voice of an angel. Imagine if Foo Fighters got together with Linkin Park and had kids, then their kids had kids with bands like Emarosa and Young Guns whilst listening to a lot of Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Papa Roach through the pregnancy. That pretty much sums it up.
DP!: You’ve now played Slam Dunk and Download Festival. How did you find them?
ID: Absolutely incredible. The turn out was unbelievable and the crowds went insane for us. We filled the tent at Download and there were still loads of people watching from outside the tent who couldn’t fit inside. We played a couple of the best performances of our lives at those shows and we’re so happy that Red Bull Bedroom Jam gave us the opportunity to have some of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Bring on Hevy!
DP!: Why should people come and check out your set at one of the festivals or on an upcoming tour?
ID: We’re absolutely insane live. We have had massive praise over the years for jumping around on stage like raving lunatics and still managing to play tighter than an Oompa-Loompa’s doorway.
DP!: Have you managed to check out and listen to any of the other bands who’ve made it to this stage of the RBBJ contest?
ID: Yeah. We’ve managed to watch every band, which has been really cool. All of the bands this year are incredible and have really played their hearts out. We’ve made really good friends with all of them and it’s going to be a really tough decision of who wins at the end of it all.
DP!: What’s in the pipeline for you guys so far this year?
ID: We’re playing a few festivals as well as going on tour with Fei Comodo for a few weeks in July. It’s their last ever tour, so make sure that you all go and check them out. We’re also working on our debut album and we can’t wait to show everyone our new songs as we’re really proud of them. We’re actually playing a brand new song on our upcoming shows, so if you want to hear it then you’ll have to come down and check us out live this summer. All our dates can be found on our Facebook page (here). There’s also a load of information on our Twitter (here), so have a look on there as well. Oh, and watch all of our music videos on our YouTube channel (here) whilst you’re at it.
DP!: Finally, is there anything else that you’d like to add and share with our readers?
ID: Check out our new video for our song ‘Burning Out’. It’s on our YouTube channel (here). Also, please, please, please catch us on tour and give us the chance to blow you away.
