Jamie Lenman has released two new songs, ‘Powerless’ and ‘Mistakes’, following their debut during his recent Separation Event livestream event.
The two singles act as Lenman‘s first new offerings since last year’s ‘King Of Clubs’ mini-album, with ‘Powerless’ also featuring guest vocalist Djamila Azzouz of Ithaca.
Speaking on the two new singles, ‘Lenman had this to say.
“A lot of people thought ‘The Future Is Dead’ was my pandemic song, but actually it was about the global climate crisis. ‘Powerless’ on the other hand was most definitely written under the shadow of the virus, to express those feelings of helplessness, particularly at the collapse of the entertainment industry. I wanted to reach out and ask how other people were coping with it, to give it a broader emotional scope than just one person’s view, so I asked Djamila from Ithaca to write half the lyrics. We met on my tour at the end of 2019 and I knew she’d bring something amazing to the table – I’m so glad I got her down to Separation Event and on my single.
‘Mistakes’ is a little rock and roll number that had been going round in my head since I finished making ‘King Of Clubs’. I think both this and ‘Powerless’ sit vaguely under the ‘King Of Clubs’ umbrella but I’m not sure if they’d have worked on the actual record – ‘Powerless’ is too brutal and ‘Mistakes’ is maybe a little too light. Lyrically the song is about reconciling all the bad things you may have done in the past with the person you are today, which can be quite tough. But the tune itself is actually quite jaunty – I’m looking forward to doing this one live.”
