WHAT THE BAND SAY:
DP!: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard Written By Wolves before?
Mikey: We describe Written By Wolves as cinematic rock, but the band has always been about taking our favourite elements of rock, pop, electronic, alternative and hip hop and trying to smash them all together into one cohesive sound.
DP!: How did the band form?
Mikey: In late 2014, Davie, Karl, Bahador, and I had all been out of bands long enough to decide it was time to start a new one. We had been friends for a long time and had always talked about starting something together, but the timing had never worked out. We got together to talk about what we might want to do if we were to start something new and all got on the same page very quickly.
Towards the end of 2016, we were looking to intensify the percussive and electronic elements of our live show and met Oli through mutual friends. We asked him to join on the spot without even seeing him play! We got pretty lucky he didn’t suck, to be honest.
DP!: What plans do you have for the future?
Mikey: We have some pretty epic festival shows lined up over the New Zealand summer and we are just locking in some tour details as well. It is definitely time to take our show on the road though and we are currently looking at options and opportunities to tour overseas. Fingers crossed a few things fall into place and we will see you guys sooner rather than later…
DP!: Which new bands are you listening to right now?
Mikey: We are all big fans of Normandie; their White Flag album is insanely good. Absolutely loving what FEVER 333 and Hands Like Houses are doing right now as well.
There are some epic bands down here in New Zealand as well that you may not have heard of, but you should definitely check out. Coridian, Devilskin, Villainy, She Loves You, Skinny Hobos and Dead Favours to name but a few.
DP!: Which bands do you aspire to and why?
Mikey: We are big fans of Bring Me The Horizon, both everything they are doing right now and have done before. I know their transformation has been polarising, but I think what they are doing is absolutely genius.
FEVER 333 are another band doing incredible things. I was lucky enough to catch letlive. on their final tour and find it inconceivable that Jason Butler has worked out how to take his stage antics to a whole new level.
There are so many bands out there right now writing incredible music and really challenging the idea of what rock music is, what it can be, and how it is performed live. What a time to be alive, haha!
DP!: What’s the stand out moment in your career so far?
Mikey: Right now, it is releasing this album. I can’t really describe how proud I am of it and how good it feels to finally have it out in the world after working so hard on it for so long. The response so far has been pretty incredible (thanks for the amazing review by the way), so there is also a pretty intense sense of relief that has come with it.
