We’re putting the spotlight on the hottest and most exciting new bands around with our Introducing feature, ready to highlight the artists with the biggest potential to make an impact on their scene.
Michigan nu-metalcore band Sleep Waker‘s new single ‘Skin’ treats us with their heavy combination of hardcore, metalcore and beatdowns. Their raw take on the genres is a brutally refreshing and contemporary that rivals even the best of their peers.
We were lucky enough to catch up with drummer Frankie Mish to talk about the origins and the future of the band.

WHAT THE BAND SAY:
DP!: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard Sleep Waker before?
Frankie: I would say to someone just stumbling onto our sound, we’re definitely a modern day metalcore band, but we like to throw in tons of influence from other subgenres, bands, and whatever we’re listening to at the moment. I like to think that listening between Lost in Dreams and Don’t Look at the Moon you can kinda pick up on the hardcore influences, shoegaze, djent, and hip hop influence.
DP!: How did the band form?
Frankie: Well I’ve known Hunter since I was 12, and for years he and I tried starting tons of failed bands in my parents basement. When I was 15, I was writing music on Guitar Pro, bored, and didn’t have many musician friends, so I joined a band. I started playing a few shows, pitched them the guitar pro demos, and they turned them down, so the guitarist from that band, Hunter, and I branched off and started Sleep Waker. We added our guitarist, Jason, a few months after our first show as a 3 piece, started tracking the Guitar Pro songs I wrote, which turned into Lost in Dreams, then added in all the other members from there.
DP!: What plans do you have for the future?
Frankie:When the future becomes a little clearer, hopefully we’ll be picking back up on all the tours we’ve had to miss out on haha. Otherwise, we’ve taken the time to write, create more content, and try to hone our craft a little more. Lots of practicing for our European tour with Within Destruction, Signs of the Swarm, and Bodysnatcher, and lots of new ideas to try and get stuff out to people. We do all our videos and design in house, so having all the free time during quarantine definitely helped a lot.
DP!: Which new bands are you listening to right now?
Frankie: I’ve been loving Loathe and Ocean Grove’s albums, and the new Hundredth is incredibly good. I think Loathe, Thornhill, and Sleep Token are the three newer metal bands I listen to the most, but for the most part I listen to a lot of really chill atmospheric or shoegaze music.
DP!: Which bands do you aspire to and why?
Frankie: I think as a band we all look up to Deftones a lot. I’m definitely interested in pushing the band into more of a conceptual direction rather than trying to conform into a set genre, which I think they’ve done an incredible job of doing as a band.
DP!: What’s the stand out moment in your career so far?
Frankie: It’s really hard to nail down the specific stand out moment of our career, but I think taking a step back and looking at all I’ve done so far is huge for me. Seeing all the tours I’ve been on, albums I’ve been a part of, songs I’ve released, and things I will be releasing/creating in the near future. I definitely came to that realization while driving at 3am in the mountains on our last tour, so I guess I could call that my stand out moment haha.
