We’re putting the spotlight on the hottest and most exciting new bands around with our Introducing feature, ready to highlight the artists with the biggest potential to make an impact on their scene.
If you like your thrash combined with black metal and early hardcore then Michigan’s Plague Years and their brand new album ‘Circle of Darkness’ should be next on your listening list. Tim Engelhardt‘s cutting vocals blend with the crunching guitars that punish so hard it’s reminiscent of early Sepultura and Obituary.
We caught up with guitarist Eric Lauder from the band to talk about their origins and their plans for the future.

WHAT THE BAND SAY:
DP!: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard Plague Years before?
Eric: We’re a thrash/death metal band for fans of Slayer, Sepultura, and even Obituary and Cannibal Corpse. Were a solid 60/40 mix of fast relentless thrash and crushing death metal.
DP!: How did the band form?
Eric: Mike (drummer) and I started this project about 10 years ago. We were already in some hardcore bands, but we were always metalheads. It was when Iron Age dropped ‘The Sleeping Eye’ where we both were like, we need to do something more metal again. It was something we always worked on but were never ever to take it fully serious due to our other projects and just finding dedicated members. It wasn’t until 2017 that we finally had a full band and started taking it seriously. Originally we were a 5 piece but our other guitar player left about a month or so before we started talking with eOne. Plague Years is Tim Englehardt – Vocals, Eric Lauder (me) – Lead Guitar, Rian Staber – Bass, and Mike Jurysta – Drums.
DP!: What plans do you have for the future?
Eric: Right now we are just working on new music and staying engaged on social media. We’re also planning a live stream that we will be promoting soon. Once everything is safe and back to normal we will be playing as many shows as possible anywhere we can.
DP!: Which new bands are you listening to right now?
Eric: Not all these bands are necessarily new but I heavily fuck with Frozen Soul, Sanguisugabogg, Skeletal Remains, and Necrot have been on rotation.
DP!: Which bands do you aspire to and why?
Eric: I’d have to say Metallica. They are my all time favourite band. The way they were able to be authentic, catchy and memorable. They were able to take metal to a platform that may never be replicated but something for all metal bands to strive for.
DP!: What’s the stand out moment in your career so far?
Eric: It would definitely be being signed to eOne. I’ve been signed before but never on this level and it just felt incredible. All this work I’ve been doing for the last 15 years was all worth it. I can’t wait to see what the future will offer after all this COVID bullshit is over.
