We’re putting the spotlight on the hottest and most exciting new bands around with our Introducing feature, ready to highlight the artists with the biggest potential to make an impact on their scene.

Despite only forming in Summer of 2016, Bristol rockers Phoxjaw have already formed their own distinctive and destructive sound and have played shows across the UK with Black Foxxes, Black Tusk, and Avon. Phoxjaw have just released their new single ‘Lottery’ with a Mexican wrestling themed video that sees the band rocking out in the middle of the ring. This is a band in their infancy who already sound like they’re 4 albums deep and filling rooms worldwide.

DP!: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard Phoxjaw before?
Phoxjaw: Noisey, heavy, grunge-infused alt rock.

DP!: How did the band form?
Phoxjaw: All of us were playing in bands in Bristol who had gigged together before. Josh & Kieran in Day Of A Thousand and Danny & Glenn in Black Elephant. After both bands disbanded, Phoxjaw was born out of fusing elements of both previous bands all whilst searching for something unique to set the new project apart. Most recently we’ve had Huw Allen join on keys/synth and it really adds a new dimension to the band. It allows us to experiment even further with the music, sounds and textures and adds a new energy to the live shows.

DP!:What plans do you have for the future?
Phoxjaw: We have just released ‘Lottery’ our latest single which has worked wonders for stepping the band up to new opportunities and landing us bigger shows. We aim to follow this up in the spring of 2018 with our debut EP and a brand new music video for one of the tracks. This will be followed with dates all over the UK, appearances at music festivals in the summer and stripped back performances in record shops promoting the new release.

DP!:Which new bands are you listening to right now?
Phoxjaw: As a collective we have such varied music tastes so nothing is off bounds for us. But to name a few: Bloody Knees, Citizen, Full Of Hell, Raketkanon, Rich Chigga, Toro Y Moi, The Growlers and of course local mates Sleeptalking who are putting out some amazing music.

DP!:Which bands do you aspire to and why?
Phoxjaw: I suppose bands like Queens Of The Stone Age, Deftones, Nirvana, Metallica are the reason we all got started playing rock music. Three out of four of those bands are still going today and that is inspiring for us, we would love to be making music together in 30 odd years time and still trying to better our last record.

DP!:What’s the stand out moment in your career so far?
Phoxjaw: We have had a great response to our music and some amazing shows in the short time that we have been a band, but our Southwest fanbase has really come through for us in the last couple of months with sellout headline shows which have been crazy. It is really rewarding for a very DIY based band like we are to take the chance on booking venues, buying merch, making records and have it pay off so much better than we possibly could have imagined. So big thank you to anyone who has supported the band in our first year, we couldn’t have done it without you.
