INTRODUCING: Nova Charisma

We’re putting the spotlight on the hottest and most exciting new bands around with our Introducing feature, ready to highlight the artists with the biggest potential to make an impact on their scene.

In early 2019, just 4 days after the last of Sergio Medina and Donovan Meleros‘ old bands diffused, the duo were on a plane to London to begin work on Nova Charisma. A year later, the band have played somewhat of a homecoming show in Shoreditch and are excited about the release of their second EP ‘Exposition II’.

We spoke with the band about their origins and what the future holds.

WHAT THE BAND SAY:

DP!: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard Nova Charisma before?
Donovan: Progressive alternative music.
Sergio: Same. Alternative music with an edge and/or bite to it.

DP!: How did the band form?
Donovan: Our old band kicked the bucket, so we started Nova Charisma to continue our passion of writing music together.
Sergio: As partners in many other domains, our main collaboration was working in our old band Sianvar together. Once that was gone, it freed us up to work together in a simpler way, not only musically, but logistically. Less cooks in the kitchen, which can be a pro and a con. Nova so far has proven to show the pros of that.

DP!: What plans do you have for the future?
Donovan: A 3rd exposition, and more shows.
Sergio: Our upcoming Exposition III, and more performances. Lots of freedom to choose how to release music moving forward, which is still under discussion.

DP!: Which new bands are you listening to right now?
Donovan: They aren’t new, but Amy Winehouse.
Sergio: Middle Kids, Greer, Body Thief.

DP!: Which bands do you aspire to and why?
Donovan: I don’t aspire to be any bands. If I’ve stood out as my own band, then I’ve accomplished something.
Sergio: In terms of the goals other bands have reached? Any band or artist that has continued the push for originality, and succeed with a record or several releases, that’s a goal I aspire to. Putting out material that inspires others to look within for their own voice, and try to showcase it in their art. If I can be a part of something that does that, I would feel accomplished.

DP!: What’s the stand out moment in your career so far?
Donovan: Selling out the venue in San Antonio, TX when we had never been there before. That was a moment of humility for me.
Sergio: I would agree with Donny in this one. Playing to a room full of people in Texas for our first show in that state.
