Two records in now and Beartooth are making a real impression on the rock and metal world. The rise of the Ohio band has been monstrous since their debut EP ‘Sick’ back in 2013, and off the back of the brilliant ‘Aggressive’ Beartooth are hitting UK venues before the end of the year. We caught up with guitarist Taylor Lumley to talk about how the band got on in 2016.
DP!: We’re all excited for your headline tour in December, the UK has embraced Beartooth with open arms since you first came over. How does it compare touring over here to back in the US and the rest of the world?
Taylor: The UK is one of our favorite places to tour in the world, for sure. It feels like a second home to us at this point because we’ve been there so much. We love coming back as much as we can.
DP!: You played a huge set on the main stage of Download Festival a Donington back in Summer, what is the festival market crowd like compared to your headline shows? How was it flying the flag for contemporary metal music on a day of older bands?
Taylor: It was an amazing experience, but I don’t really consider us some sort of flag bearer for modern bands or whatever. We love Motörhead, AC/DC, and Sabbath just as much as we love Architects, Deftones, and Every Time I Die. So for us it was just surreal to play on the same stage that so many legends have played before us.
DP!: Legends Every Time I Die have been supporting you guys in the States, is that the exact moment when you realised that you’d made it?
Taylor: I don’t think we’ll ever have a point where we’ll say “We’ve made it.” Solely because that takes away trying to push yourself to be better. You can’t keep moving forward if you already think you’ve arrived.
DP!: Vanna and Trash Boat will be joining your tour over here, so you’ve got metalcore, hardcore and pop-punk packed in to one night. Do the heavier and more melodic parts to Beartooth open you up to a wider audience? What makes you different to other bands?
Taylor: We just like to be us. What you see is what you get with us, I think that puts us on a different path than a lot of bands.
DP!: How has the reaction to ‘Aggressive’ been? Did you get everything you wanted to from the record?
Taylor: It’s been pretty wild. It’s crazy to us that so many people love the record and are there at every show, singing every single word to every single song.
DP!: What does 2017 have in store for the band?
Taylor: We have some more surprises in store after our tour with BMTH and Underoath! You’ll see!
