FEATURE: The Rumjacks’ Top 5 Drinking Songs!

Credit: Promo

Australian Celtic punks The Rumjacks‘ fifth album ‘Hestia’ marks a new era for the band as they welcome new vocalist Mike Revkees on board. The album is rebelliously dark and gritty, and has some of the most memorable and rioting choruses we’ve heard in forever.

To celebrate, we got The Rumjacks‘ bassist Johnny McKelvey to come up with his Top 5 Drinking Songs to get us in the mood.

Please be aware that, whilst this article is about drinking songs, it is important to drink responsibly. You can head to Drink Aware (here) for more information. Oh, and don’t be one of those idiots that drinks and drives.

TOWNES VAN ZANDT – ‘WAITIN’ AROUND TO DIE’

Ok, this incredibly depressing little ditty is definitely for the end of the night! Absolute mood killer and probably in some way a prediction of how your head will feel the next morning. But hey, who doesn’t love a lonesome country/folk song to soothe the blues?

DRINK TO HAVE WHILE LISTENING:
A shot of some nasty tequila would be best for this one

THE DEVIL MAKES THREE – ‘OLD NUMBER 7’

“Thank you Jack Daniels old Number 7” … Gritty songs need gritty drinks, so a whiskey it is! Nice dark/spooky song to set off a different kind of vibe for a possible night of mischief, or just sitting at the bar by yourself.

DRINK TO HAVE WHILE LISTENING:
JD tastes like garbage so I’d pair this one with with a nice Bushmills – ‘Red Bush’ Whiskey

BOOZE AND GLORY – ‘THE DAY I’M IN MY GRAVE’

“Cos I’m a drinking man on a working mans wage”. Who can’t relate to this?! Never making enough but always seeming to be able to spare a few coins for a pint. It’s all about budgeting, right?

DRINK TO HAVE WHILE LISTENING:
Keep it simple with this one, a warm can of the cheapest lager from the front of the fridge

THE BUSINESS – ‘GUINNESS BOYS’

This is definitely the perfect song for a few drinks on the weekend at your favourite spot watching the football (always Everton) and seeing some mates. Not a massive session, just a handful and try not to think about work the next day.

DRINK TO HAVE WHILE LISTENING:
Think the title says it all. Pair this one with a bunch of Guinness

THE POGUES – ‘WAXIES DARGLE’

“What will ya have? I’ll have a pint, I’ll have a pint with you sir”. Great song to start the night off! Sets the vibes just right before you go down that worm hole of slowly but surely picking slower and more depressing folk songs to sing as the night goes on. This was probably one of the first Pogues songs I really fell in love with and would put on, then get ready for the night. Also, they used a beer tray for some percussion on this recording!…perfect.

DRINK TO HAVE WHILE LISTENING:
I’d match this little party starter with a nice old spiced rum and coke
