Back in the summer of 2015, pop-rockers The Hype Theory decided it was time for a change of direction. Rebranding themselves as Tigress, the band have put themselves on a more directly rock and instrumentally heavy route in order to win over new fans, and also keep pleasing the existing ones. Their debut EP, ‘Human’, has a lot to live up to since it’s the first record to be released since the band signed to LAB Records in September, but thankfully it more than lives up to expectations.
A strong, atmospheric guitar riff introduces the record and first track ‘Alive’, with a colossal chorus boasting a fantastic performance from front woman and vocal powerhouse Katy Jackson making it the perfect opening track to the EP. The impressive vocal performances are a feature of the whole release, but it’s never more apparent than on lead single ‘Human’, which sees the whole band come together to create a great all round rock track.
Keeping up the fast-paced attitude is later track ‘Miracle’, which manages to remain lyrically poignant, despite delivering a storming number. Tigress ensure that they provide some diversity across the record on numbers like ‘Future’ and later track ‘Lucky Ones’, showing that this rebrand is about more just creating fast-paced numbers. These tracks take a somewhat calmer approach, which allows the darker nature of the former track and the positive message of the latter to really shine through.
The most notable thing about the shift from The Hype Theory to Tigress is that every member of this band has stepped up their game, and have developed into an incredibly talented UK rock band. This EP really shows this band’s development, and ‘Human’ is a fantastic first release for this quintet, especially when they need to launch a new brand. After this release and with tours planned for the future, 2016 is going to be a very exciting first full year for Tigress.
