The theatrical boys of Set It Off have been having a very successful run as of late, delivering a fantastic Ariana Grande cover/mash-up that features on ‘Punk Goes Pop, Vol. 6’, which followed-up with their sophomore full-length ‘Duality’, which really put this band firmly on the scene. Taking a new direction, Set It Off have released ‘Duality: Stories Unplugged’, taking a select handful of cuts from their record and performing them acoustically, providing a huge change of pace to what their fans are used to.
The EP opens with a piano-led version of popular hit ‘Ancient History’ which, whilst setting a slower pace, still packs a punch on the chorus. This acoustic setting really allows frontman Cody Carsson to show off his impressive vocal range and ability, rather than holding him back without a huge instrumental background, Even the anthemic chorus of ‘Why Worry’ still holds up at a calmer rate.
The offering best suited to this reimagining without a doubt is ‘Bleak December’, featuring some great vocal harmonies throughout the number. There’s some string arrangements present on the chorus, which adds a nice touch and a little something extra to an already top performance. Set It Off also treat the listeners to a new song in the form of ‘Wild Wild World’, a track very different to normal being piano-led throughout and an emotional delivery of the empowering, uplifting chorus.
Adapting all these flamboyant tracks to an acoustic setting and still delivering fantastic performances throughout is no mean feat, and is something that the Set It Off boys should be proud of. They still deliver the attitude on the likes of ‘The Haunting’ without relying on huge instrumental performances. The ‘Duality: Stories Unplugged’ EP really demonstrates why this band are setting off, and making their name well known across the scene.
