Florida’s Hot Water Music celebrated their 25th anniversary last year, which is a great achievement for any band. In celebration, they spent the latter half of the year touring around the US and Europe, and now they’re back with some fresh material in the form a new EP, ‘Shake Up The Shadows’.

‘By Any Means’ opens things up in typical punk fashion. The song hits fast and hard, and the chorus of “Keep your goals and strength will grow / To take on anything by any means” turns it into an anthem of empowerment. At just over two minutes it’s definitely a quick ride, possibly even over too quickly.

The title-track takes things a little slower, even to the point of sounding a little like Stereophonics, before ‘Denatured’ amps up the energy again well past eleven. With the ambient guitar feedback in the intro fading into the opening drum fill, this song could well have opened the EP, and it keeps up its pace pretty much the whole way through.

Later track, ‘Afar And Away’, closes off the EP in epic style. The anthemic intro brings a classic rock vibe into the mix, and the chorus “We all know the old road / We all know the result” really completes the experience.

All things considered, ‘Shake Up The Shadows’ is a classic punk EP with some classic rock hooks. It’s energetic, loud and angry, but, above all else, it’s catchy.
