Although Frank Zummo might not be a name that you instantly recognise, you’ve more than likely heard of some of the bands he’s been a part of over the years, namely as the drummer for Sum 41 since 2015.

Now, Zummo has embarked on his side-project and solo venture with the release of his debut EP, ‘It’s My War’.

Opener ‘Hit The Ground’, which features vocals from Landon Tewers (The Plot In You), perfectly combines heavier vocals whilst musically encapsulating an EDM backbeat, which provides a completely new territory for Zummo, stepping away from the more rock-driven sound that he’s renowned for.

‘Holy Ghost’ features up-and-coming band The Underclassmen, slowing things right down in this infectiously catchy pop number, one which could comfortably find itself amongst any of today’s mainstream charts. Its lyrics will leave you singing along in no time, with the hauntingly repetition of “Catch me, catch me, if you can” bound to loop in your head for hours.

Finally, ‘E.O.T.E.’ closes as the EP’s standout moment. Featuring vocals from Dying In Designer, it explores the notion of the personas that we hide behind on social media whilst never showing personal struggles or anxieties. The dynamic from this duo is apparent throughout, using this metaphor of standing on the edge of the earth about to fall any second to perfectly sum up this situation.

It goes without saying that the main take away from ‘It’s My War’, of course, is Frank Zummo‘s insatiable drum work, but what makes this refreshing is at no point does this overshadow any of the tracks. It would have been all too easy for him to make an EP for drummers by a drummer, but instead he has stepped back and focused on the production as a whole and in turn created a brilliant debut EP.
