If you love solid, fast-paced punk rock music that makes you want to smash things up, then Drones may be the band for you. Their latest EP, ‘Free Marked Kid’, is one of real promise and indicates that this sort of frenetic and none letting up music still has a place and can still be relevant today.

Opening track, ‘Raise The Stakes’, is everything that you’d expect and more from a modern punk outfit; there’s bags of energy, gang vocals and an unrepentant sensibility. The surprising thing is how fresh the overall sound of this band is, especially the guitars. Their thick lines throttle through every track and even though the band sounds less Rancid and more Anti-Flag, there’s a real lack of giving a shit about what people think here.

On ‘Empty Words’, we get a slowed down chorus, which you’d think would give the EP a bit of variety and a well earned break from the fast-paced nature of the rest of the material, but the band don’t really pull it off too well. The slower vocals just don’t work at all and you end up wanting them to just do what they deliver in the rest of the songs. The title-track is a perfect example, it’s fast and it just works perfectly for what this band has to offer, so when they try to divert from that formula it’s a little bit disappointing.

It’s an EP that works for the most part and punk lovers will lap this stuff up. If you’re not a fan of the genre, then it’s probably best to stay well away from Drones. Otherwise, ‘Free Marked Kid’ is a truly solid EP from a really talented group. Expect bigger things to come very soon.
