A lot of successful musicians are fond of side-projects, but potentially none more than Craig Owens, renowned for his work with Chiodos but far from limited to that. In fact, he’s close to having more side-projects than Daenarys Targaryn has titles.

Boxing off his previous work with Isles & Glaciers, Cinematic Sunrise, The Sound Of Animals Fighting, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows, and most recently putting Chiodos firmly to bed, Owens now has badXchannels as his only musical outlet, and it has a lot to live up considering the success of his earlier work, and hopefully with that comes some notable stability.

Debut offering ‘WHYDFML’ (which stands for ‘What Have You Done For Me Lately’) opens with ‘One Car Funeral’, and introduces the singer’s trademark vocal style with his outstanding level of control despite the high octave, especially over the chorus. Owens also enlists the help of a few of the industry’s big names across this relatively short EP, as rapper Jon Connor helps make ‘You Know I Will’ a top track, and Missio delivers a unique spin to closer ‘Same Thing Every Day’.

The main theme running through a lot of Owens‘ most recent projects is the heavy focus on relationships, which, whilst occasionally is eloquently explained in the lyrics, more often than not comes across in a rather dull and blunt manner that not even Tyler Carter of Issues can recover across ‘Complicated’.

If you’re a fan of Craig Owens‘ work then you’ll certainly appreciate badXchannels and what’s on offer throughout ‘WHYDFML’. It does, however, leave a fair bit to be desired, especially considering the calibre of his previous work.

Whilst the new R&B approach is introducing a new lease of life into Owens‘ work, it’s still a work in progress… y’know, if he actually sticks with this project.
