Pop-punk quintet As It Is have released us a bounty of new tunes in the form of their ‘This Mind Of Mine’ EP. It’s short and sweet at only 4 tracks long, but it shows everyone just what these Brighton boys can do. Mixing sugary sweet vocals with some more angst-filled performances over a classically pop-punk background works really well, and could set this band up well for the future.

Opening track, ‘Bitter Broken Me’, kicks things off fast-paced and punchy, grabbing the listeners attention at the first available opportunity. The contrasting vocal styles of frontman Patty Walters and guitarist/vocalist Benjamin Biss work together perfectly across this record, and help to keep As It Is from being boxed into any of the stereotypical pop-punk categories with too soft or purely rough vocals.

Keeping in with the old school pop-punk vibe, ‘Can’t Save Myself’ has a feel of Yellowcard‘s hugely popular hit ‘Ocean Avenue’ to it which can only be a good thing, with an infectiously catchy chorus and upbeat rhythm that’ll be rattling around fans heads for days at a time. Fast-paced number ‘Horoscopes’ sees As It Is at their most punk rock throughout the whole EP through the verses, with the rougher vocals taking centre stage before the clean vocals deliver the more pop-focused chorus.

Closing track, ‘Relive This Story’, sets a slower pace but keeps in with the tone set by the record, with some self-deprecating lyrics and a powerful vocal delivery hammering the point home it rounds off this record well.

As It Is have set themselves up well with this release. It’ll no doubt win over plenty of people, but its selling point is that it hails back to the classic pop-punk that made people fall in love with the genre. If they keep focusing on this, then there’s no reason this band can’t achieve a lot of success in their future.
