It’s never a good sign when a record peaks with its intro track, but sadly, that’s exactly what happens here on Alaska! Alaska!‘s latest effort, ‘Cabin Fever’ (though, in all fairness, it is a pretty cool intro). In fact, from start-to-finish, it almost seems as if more thought went into the aesthetics of this EP than the actual music.
See, no matter how many quirky song titles (‘Phanomanomanom’) or internet humour soundbites (‘Orange Peanut’, featuring an outro taken from one of Bad Lip Reading’s NFL videos) you throw at your music, it’s impossible to make up for sounding as obviously amateur as this does. We’re not asking for million dollar production jobs or huge, dynamic soundscapes here. It’s a pop-punk record, we wouldn’t want that. But, a bit of effort would be nice.
The instrumentation is mind-numbingly basic, the melodies are almost offensive in their predictability and the vocals are just straight up awful. It’s obvious that someone’s had a go at making this sound presentable, to the extent that you can hear all the instruments, for better or worse, but all to very little avail.
There’s so much good pop-punk around these days and these guys are going to have to do a hell of a lot better than this to get anyone’s attention.
