DOWNLOAD 2013 PREVIEW: Good Old Fashioned Rock Music

Welcome to part four in a series of features previewing this year’s Download Festival. Each week, we shall be looking at a particular genre or scene that will be represented at the festival. You may have heard some of the more established bands, but these previews may introduce you to similar bands that are in the same vain.

In part four, we will be delving into the genre that Download was invented for: hard rock.

PAPA ROACH

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Friday @ 3:35pm
Who do they clash with?: DragonForce (Zippo), Hang The Bastard / The Sword (Pepsi Max), Page 44 (Red Bull), Toseland (Jagermeister)
Listen: Angels & Insects (Live at Download Festival 2007)

Papa Roach seem to be playing at every festival you’ve ever been to, but they’re also one of those ‘meh’ bands that you always pass up on watching. This year doesn’t look like it’s gonna throw up too much of a clash when they’re on, so how about making this time the time you finally watch them? You know you wanna be in the crowd on Main Stage screaming the words to ‘Last Resort’ back at Jacoby Shaddix.

ALICE IN CHAINS

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Saturday @ 3:50pm
Who do they clash with?: Karnivool / Lit (Zippo), Empress / Heart of a Coward (Pepsi Max), Wounds (Red Bull), Crowns / Buffalo Summer (Jagermeister)
Listen: Live at Sonisphere 2010 (Full Set Video Stream)

Alice In Chains are fucking awesome live. They were one of the best bands at Sonisphere in 2011, even without the late Layne Staley. ‘Rooster’ is a particular highlight of their live set, where everything just stops and you appreciate some damn fine music playing. Some of their newer stuff is damn heavy as well, so you might find some unexpected pits flaring up.

When?: Sunday @ 4:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Rival Sons (Zippo), Vision of Disorder (Pepsi Max), Crash Mansion (Jagermeister)
Listen: Made Of Scars (Live at Download Festival 2010)

Umm, it’s Corey Taylor at Download, do you need any more convincing? 4:20pm on Sunday is gonna be the time for you to bang your head and go fucking mental to songs like ’30/30-150′ and ‘Get Inside’ before shedding a tear to ‘Bother’ and ‘Through Glass’.

Who do they clash with?: Escape The Fate (Zippo), Nekrogoblikon (Pepsi Max), Astroid Boys (Red Bull), The Killing Floor (Jagermeister)

THE WILD LIES

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Saturday @ 11:40am
