BANDS THAT INSPIRE: Santa Cruz

Finnish modern hard rockers Santa Cruz are back! Album number three ‘Bad Blood Rising’ is en route from HELLsinki and will be arriving mid November via M-Theory Audio. If you’re into Guns N’ Roses style guitar riffs mixed with punk attitude and a hint of metal, you’ll be chuffed to bits with this young take on the classic rock genre. To find out how much Santa Cruz were influenced by those iconic rock pioneers, we got guitarist Johnny Cruz to choose 5 records that have inspired the band into what they are today.

MÖTLEY CRÜE – DR. FEELGOOD

This is a pretty obvious one. When we started as a band we listened lot of 80s bands like Mötley, Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi etc… This album is pretty much what we wanted to sound like. Huge drums and guitars, insanely big gang vocals. That´s was something that we wanted as a band when we were younger. And still, you can hear these roots in our music.

BRING ME THE HORIZON – SEMPITERNAL

When I first heard “Shadow Moses” I was like holy shit, somebody’s done Mötley Crüe with growls hahah. The whole Sempiternal album is a masterpiece, it defined metalcore and it´s pretty hard to top that album if you play that genre. Thank god we don’t. Production wise it’s a masterpiece, I love the choirs, synths and additional drums.

STEREOPHONICS – MAYBE TOMORROW

This is one of my all-time favourite songs, and as a lyricist it’s inspired me a lot. Musically, it hasn’t influenced our sound, but the expression and delivery is something I aspire to achieve in our music. And I´d give my left testicle to have the voice of Kelly Jones on this song. So fucking good.

CHILDREN OF BODOM – HATE CREW DEATHROLL

When it comes to solos and guitar leads, this album has been one of the biggest influences. When you listen to solos on songs like ‘Bodom Beach Terror’ and ‘Hate Crew Deathroll’ you notice where a lot of my playing is from. Also, it’s one of my all-time favourite albums. They’re so musically tight, and the songs are so good. (Plus, I have to put something from Finland here).

BACKSTREET BOYS – MILLENNIUM

This is the ace up our sleeve. One of our technicians once said: “You´re like the Backstreet Boys gone wrong”, and yeah we are. This album still has some of the best melodies and production to date. It´s actually a rock album that has been put in a pop mould. If you listen to song ‘Larger Than Life’ for example, that shit is heavy as fuck! Maybe we should do a cover of that song haha… This album is probably embedded in our sub-conscious ´cause it was huge in 2000, when we were kids.
