There’s a whole bunch of acoustic solo artists attempting the British rock circuit right now and Rob Lynch certainly stands very highly in the ranks, his hit track ‘My Friends And I’ stealing hearts and singalongs ever since ‘All These Nights In Bars Will Somehow Save My Soul’ dropped two years ago. Now, the London based singer has returned with a full band (featuring his chums from Deaf Havana and We Are The Ocean) for a mixed follow-up in ‘Baby, I’m A Runway’.
The first thing that stands out during ‘Prove It!’ is that Lynch has returned with a more enunciated vocal performance, highlighting his accent more than ever before, yet the opener is a massive disappointment as the style doesn’t suit the singer and just comes across so wet and lackluster. All we end up with is a rubbish pop song that has no attitude, angst, or anything exciting. Thankfully, the mishap is quickly redeemed with ‘Selfish Bones’ and ‘Sure Thing’, which are well thought out tracks with radio worthy choruses, the latter showcasing what Lynch can do with his voice in a killer vocal solo during the bridge.
As ‘Baby, I’m A Runaway’ progresses, so does the variety of influences that pour through the record. Whether it’s the Weezer-esque, grunge fueled introduction to ‘Salt Spring’ or the undeniably Death Cab For Cutie ‘Tectonic Plates# that hails the vulnerable side of Rob Lynch, it’s difficult to pinpoint the target audience for the album. The delicate nature of songs like ‘Youth’ isn’t going to appeal to the people into the upbeat tracks like ‘Closer’, and there is little good enough to stand on its own in the pop-rock scene. Rob Lynch has plenty of good traits but needs to stick to them to succeed in whichever path he finds himself traveling.
