Bulldozing their way through the UK rock scene with a particularly un-radio friendly stoner/sludge hybrid sound, Corby wrecking crew Raging Speedhorn looked as though they could inflict some serious Top 40 damage at the turn of millennium. However, the all too familiar scenario of label turmoil/financial issues proved to derail the band just four records into their career, with the six-piece ultimately crumbling in 2008. Back with renewed fire and a (mostly) original line-up, the gleefully rampaging ‘Lost Ritual’ is a joyous return.
Thankfully, there is little tampering with the formula here, the band charging headlong into ten unfiltered cuts of pure Speedhorn filth, be it the teeth shattering likes of opener ‘Bring Out Your Dead’, or ‘Halfway To Hell’‘s later-day Gallows assault. Indeed, ‘Lost Ritual’ is chock full of succinct, groove driven anthems, pitched somewhere between lairy, street tough vibes and turbo-charged rock ‘n’ roll spirit (‘Motorhead’, the band’s most traditionally rockin’ tune yet, is a fitting Lemmy tribute) and all as uncomplicatedly thrilling as the last.
Funded entirely through a PledgeMusic campaign, it’s clear that fans were clambering for something new from the ‘horn. Picking up exactly where they left off, ‘Lost Ritual’ barely puts a foot wrong in delivering the strain of hulking, Sabbath-ian riff worship and pissed up aggression bound to ignite festival stages and sweat-box venues alike. Welcome back, lads.
