A lot of bands from the darker end of the metal spectrum can often become repetitive with each release, and this usually comes as a result due to the band failing to experiment or switch it up in order to not ‘sell out’ or ‘stick to their roots’. However, as New Orleans outfit Goatwhore prove, you can experiment and keep things fresh and still sound like the darkest motherfuckers on this wretched planet.
With ‘Constricting Rage Of The Merciless’, Goatwhore have seemingly thrown all of their influences against the wall and seen what stuck. Whilst your average Wikipedia user would call them a “Blackened Death Metal”, this album dabbles in so much more; there are moments of thrash, sludge, and just pure darkness. Whilst the album’s overall tone is mostly speed-y black death metal, songs like ‘Baring Teeth For Revolt’ and ‘FBS’ have a pure chug-beer-and-headbang thrash feel, whilst ‘Cold Earth Consumed In Dying Flesh’ and its slow riffs are dripping in NOLA sludge and old school deathly influences.
Whilst this album (like the last couple) is a continuation of Goatwhore‘s sound developing by sourcing their influences more, it’s still as undeniably dark and twisted. Even the track names are more creatively disturbing than a lot of contemporary Death Metal band’s outputs right now.
Clearly, Goatwhore know that to keep things fresh sometimes you need to let your influences shine. ‘Constricting Rage Of The Merciless’ is a haunting and crushing slab of dark metal that wears its influences proudly on its bloody sleeve.
