Even given their turbulent career thus far, not to mention frequent brushes with tragedy, venerated death metal legends Decapitated have time and again managed to imbue their peerless, ultra-modern extremity with both wildly inventive and stridently destructive leaps. Sixth full-length record, ‘Blood Mantra’, continues this reliable tradition of blood-soaked dynamic enterprise, and quite simply reaffirms the Polish quartet’s unshakable standing as one of the genre’s all-time greats.
Notwithstanding the band’s steadfast underpinning of scalpel keen tech-death, ‘Blood Mantra’ contains perhaps more forays into forward looking exploration than we have seen before. The likes of ‘Veins’ sees a hard rocking, titanic groove go head-to-head with some mutant rhythmic heave, whereas the sublime guitar atmospherics elsewhere (‘Nest’) flaunt a progressive ambiance which sits rather comfortably next to the astounding riff-barbarism on display.
Indeed, Decapitated‘s creative vision has never proved to compromise their scabrous impact, and this record is without doubt no exception as it deals wave after hellish wave of fearsome death metal blows. ‘The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation’ is spine shattering, a syncopated example of the band absolutely on top of their instrumental game, the title-track and opener ‘Exiled In Flesh’ not far behind with their bludgeoning blast and claw-hammer attack. Certainly equaling career best form, these standard bearers of contemporary violence remain as diverse, distinctive and deadly as ever.
