Cradle Of Filth just won’t go away. For twenty years they’ve been playing black metal wrong, annoying the trve and amusing the casual. Like I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! though, you can’t help but come back for more. ‘The Manticore And Other Horrors’ is COF‘s tenth full-length, believe it or not. Despite guitarist Paul Allender‘s claims, it doesn’t particularly push the boat out on the COF sound much, but it does provide another solid nail in the band’s coffin of achievements.

Long-time fans will happily lap up songs like ‘The Abhorrent’ and ‘Frost On Her Pillow’, whilst newcomers will find themselves pleasantly surprised and wondering why they haven’t paid attention to COF before.

Dani Filth is an annoying little fellow. However, he seems like the sort of bloke that will not give two shits what people think of him. His bizarre little owl screams are back all over ‘The Manticore…’, along with a surprisingly competent death growl. It doesn’t really matter that he sounds like a bellend when he tries to do it live, because on record his vocals actually sound pretty good.

Paul Allender is pretty outspoken in COF, but he more than makes up for it with his desperately catchy guitar riffs. For a band in their twentieth year, they sure as hell haven’t lost any of their creativity.

COF are probably pants to hang out with. For one, they wear those silly bondage costumes all the time. Maybe back in the early 90s where they were shocking people with their “Jesus Is a Cunt” t-shirts it seemed like a good idea, but in 2012 maybe they should stop dressing like someone who goes to those questionable gothic club nights. Those are the sort of people that will probably enjoy ‘The Manticore…’ the most though. They’ll overplay songs like ‘Huge Onyx Wings Behind Despair’ and claim that it’s the most epic Satanic song that they’ve ever heard. Meanwhile, Dani Filth is probably enjoying a beer somewhere and watching Manchester United.

The ‘Creatures From The Black Abyss’ tour comes to The Forum in London on the 19th December. With support coming from Rotting Christ and God Seed, you can be sure to have a lovely evening with your good chum, Satan.
