Melodic hardcore is alive and well in Lincoln. Climates may herald from the sleepy midland cathedral city, but hey, some of that Sheffield steel must have travelled on the wind. This 5-piece snuck onto the scene with 2012’s mini-album ‘What Means The Most’, causing ripples rather than waves. Debut full-length ‘Body Clocks’ is set to change all that. Urgent, conscientious and muscular, Climates have branded their names on the scene with a single strike.

Firstly, enough cannot be made of the sheer step up in quality, both in recording and song writing, that ‘Body Clocks’ represents over its EP predecessors. The structures are more dynamic, their sound more varied. Climates are making a shot for scale too, with orchestral arrangements and the heaviest riffs the band have penned yet. Lead single, ‘Heaven (Is Only In My Head)’, is a perfect example of this new, polished sound. The drums are crisp, with stringed accompaniment fleshing out the melody, all driving towards the killer “Wishing it all away” vocal hook in the chorus. It’s an exercise in tension building.

A greater focus on the melodic than most, it’s the clean vocals and lead guitar that distinguished Climates‘ sound. It’s unfortunate to hear about the departure of vocalist Wes Thompson, responsible for the soaring moments on ‘Leaves Of Legacy’ and ‘In The Heart Of Man’. While his performance on record is genuinely impressive, a recent statement from the band cited Thompson‘s reluctance to improve the strength of his live voice as the reason for his departure. The balance between hardcore and melodic elements on ‘Body Clocks’ is just right; let’s hope that whoever Thompson‘s replacement turns out to be that they continue to maintain this equilibrium.

In a genre characterised by melodrama, ‘Body Clocks’ achieves a feeling of earnestness and genuine impact. Climates have the hooks (‘In The Heart Of Man’, ‘Leaves Of Legacy’), the brawn (‘Cryptic’, ‘Whole Hearted’) and the dynamic scale (‘Sundown’, ‘Worlds Away’). All that’s left now is to find a steady line-up capable of delivering the intensity found on record in a live setting.
