ALBUM: Charli XCX – Sucker

Release Date: February 16th 2015
Label: Asylum Records/Atlantic Records

Charli XCX has been steadily making a name for herself through work with various other artists, co-writing the Icona Pop breakthrough hit ‘I Love It’, and featuring on Iggy Azalea‘s huge single ‘Fancy’, to name but a few. It’s now time for this pop princess to stand on her own and try to take the music scene by storm which, if radio plays and tour appearances are anything to go by, she’s well on her way to doing with her second full-length, ‘Sucker’.

Opening number and title track, ‘Sucker’, brings in the album in such a blaring, sugary sweet pop style that it could be the theme tune to a drag show. Charli XCX keeps the attitude levels up on later tracks ‘Gold Coins’ and ‘London Queen’, both complete with choruses that will be rattling ’round your head for days on end. Even calmer track ‘Die Tonight’, despite the title, has more energy to it than would be expected.

Hit single ‘Boom Clap’ is definitely an album highlight, showing Charli XCX doing what she does best with a huge, infectious pop chorus, but with some actual singing rather than just delivering the lyrics dripping with attitude for maximum effect. Later track, ‘Body Of My Own’, sees this pop artist pull off another top performance and demonstrate why she’s becoming an international hit.

If pop music is your thing and you’re a fan of the more flamboyant, over the top performances provided by the like of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, then this album will be perfect for you. It’s bursting at the seams with catchy tunes and choruses more infectious than ebola. This record shows that Charli XCX is definitely a solo artist in her own right, and does a lot more than feature on other artists’ work.
