Bring Me The Horizon have been through a lot of shit since they had any hint of spotlight upon them, especially after the alleged incident in Nottingham with frontman Oliver Sykes hit the media. What’s more, their debut full-length ‘Count Your Blessings’ received a lot of negative comments compared to their EP release ‘This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For’. But now it’s reached October 2008, and with their latest effort ‘Suicide Season’, a lot of the haters can scrap what they’ve said about the band in past and start the slate anew.

First thing’s first, Oli Sykes’ vocals have changed and developed dramatically since their debut, and he’s now incorporated Frank Carter-esque furiated punk yells to the table, which is densely featured in ‘It Was Written In Blood’. Aswell as the vocal change in this song, it also presents a side in the band you’d never thought you’d witness a year or two ago, giving off a more mellow feel to any of their previous material. ‘Chelsea Smile’ also packs a pleasant surprise, introducing electronic synth samples (thanks to contributions from Luis Dubuc of The Secret Handshake) creating one of many songs on the album that their talent outweighs their young age. Though for the most part the band have a heavy and hardcore approach in their music, they still manage to create hooks that are usually a rarity with most bands in the same genre, such as the line “Party ’til you pass out, drink ’til your dead. Dance all night ’til you can’t feel your legs”, from ‘Football Season Is Over’, and the constantly repeated “We will never sleep, ’cause sleep is for the weak. And we will never rest, ’til we’re all fucking dead” chorus line from ‘Diamonds Aren’t Forever’. One of the strongest moments of the album is the title track, which is also their longest song to-date at over 8 minutes, reaching a very serious and emotionally issue which is delivered effectively in the song. The variations of style and tempo in the song greatly surpasses anything achieved on their previous album, and Oli‘s vocal work is enough to raise goosebumps on your skin.

Where ‘Count Your Blessings’ was getting the band on their feet musically, ‘Suicide Season’ has got them up and fighting their way for the respect they deserve. The band are now revealing the level of their talents, and through the album have also revealed how mature they’ve became as song writers in the space of two years. If you hate Bring Me The Horizon then give them another chance, as this album is a complete revamp.
