ALBUM: Attila – Guilty Pleasure

Release Date: November 24th, 2014
Label: Artery Recordings/Razor & Tie

With their modus operandi thus far revolving around pushing peoples’ buttons, Attila‘s ‘fuck the haterz’ shtick has worn itself down to the point of utter redundancy. Nigh on ten years into the band’s career, their swaggering deathcore nonsense continues in its urgent attempts to offend, yet by now just smacks of laughable desperation, with sixth full-length ‘Guilty Pleasure’ giving us yet more reasons to care less.

Sure, it’s intentionally provocative, and perhaps the faux tough guy knuckle dragging and the imbecilic lyrical spew are to some as hilariously outrageous as they were devised to be, yet to allow Attila any time of day because “oh, but it’s not meant to be taken seriously” or “it’s all in good fun” looks past some seriously questionable moral decisions from the band.

The timeless ingenuity of the gang chant “Who’s the faggot now?” in a sub-Emmure (imagine that?) ‘Proving Grounds’ or the side-splitting refrain of “Tits! Tits! Tits!” in ‘Dirty Dirty’ are just two examples of how Attila breach that fine line from jocular to drivel time and time again.

Incredibly, the instrumentation here is a tangible step up, in so far as a couple of killer guitar leads are tossed our way between the open string rhythmic claptrap. Ultimately, however, ‘Guilty Pleasure’ is as tasteless and dimwitted as most would have foreseen, and with a decade of vulgarity under their belt, the fact is that finding offense here really isn’t worth anyone’s time. Let’s just ignore Attila, and hopefully, one day, they might go away.
