With their signature brand of rampaging Viking brutality honed to a scalpel keen edge, there is little fear of Amon Amarth disappointing with ‘Jomsviking’, their tenth record in an over two decade and counting career. Impacting like a broadsword to the temple, the Swedish five-piece turn in yet another bombastic affair brimming with arms aloft melodies and unyielding death metal blows.
Indeed, it’s business as usual somewhat as the band hurtle into the glorious metallic bluster of ‘First Kill’, the album from here on out boasting all the hallmarks of their dramatic sound, from the Maiden-esque six string interplay of ‘On A Sea Of Blood’ and the stately, pints in the air singalong that is ‘Raise Your Horns’, through to highlight track ‘The Way Of Vikings’ with its anthemic sweep.
It’s all instantly recognizable, and plays out with the muscular energy, gleaming hooks and snarling odes to Viking conquest that are sure to delight fans looking for Amon Amarth‘s renowned assault. Some detractors may grumble about ‘playing it safe’, but when a record slays as consistently as ‘Jomsviking’, there is little reason to care.
