TOP 10 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR: 2012

Well, 2012 has been one hell of a year. Thankfully, the world hasn’t ended and hopefully that’ll remain the same for these remaining few weeks, though 21/12/2012 is less than a week away now. Anyway, our survival has allowed us to be blessed with many great releases throughout these past 12 months, spawning from acts across the globe at many different stages of their career.

It’s been difficult to narrow them down, but together, DEAD PRESS! has managed to collate what we think have been the top 10 albums of the year. Have a look below and see what we think has made 2012 just that extra bit special and has surely set a benchmark for 2013 to up the ante:

DEAD PRESS! TOP 10:

10.) Bury Tomorrow – ‘The Union Of Crowns’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“In terms of development from their previous album, ‘Portraits’, Bury Tomorrow have nailed it. This album is much more mature, more memorable, easier to find yourself listening to over and over (and over again). A solid effort from one of the UK’s most notorious metalcore bands.”

09.) Enter Shikari – ‘A Flash Flood Of Colour’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“When paired against ‘Common Dreads’, it just sounds stronger and more confident, with smoothed edges and corners the band perhaps didn’t catch onto with that effort. ‘A Flash Flood Of Colour’ already stands as a strong entry of the music to come in 2012, and will no doubt set up the band for a busy and successful year to follow.”

08.) The Chariot – ‘One Wing’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“This record is seminal, both to The Chariot and the music scene as a whole. It’s also flawless and the first time I’ve ever given 10 stars to an album. Upon listening, it honestly gave me chills. I suggest you take some time and sit down with ‘One Wing’.”

07.) Black Breath – ‘Sentenced To Life’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“If you’ve ever forcibly consumed your own faeces, then you know what to expect from Black Breath’s riffage; vile, crunchy, and hard to swallow. They just keep coming as well throughout the album, like so many chilli infested Saturday morning beer shits.”

06.) Cancer Bats – ‘Dead Set On Living’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“This album is simply outstanding, overflowing with grimy, powerful, all round epic anthems that will have your head banging without you even realising you’re doing it.”

You can read the full review here.

05.) Gallows – ‘Gallows’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“You will notice I haven’t mentioned any names when talking about the line-up change and this is deliberate because, frankly, it makes no difference. Gallows are Gallows and they’ve proved it with this record. ‘Gallows’ is unapologetic and full of hate, exactly how a punk record should be.”

04.) Don Broco – ‘Priorities’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“‘Priorities’ is a true testament to British music. So, there you have it, not only is this an outstanding album and a bloody good listen but it’s transcending genres also. God damn it Don Broco, you have really outdone yourself here. Kudos.”

03.) While She Sleeps – ‘This Is The Six’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“The sound of a band positively brimming with confidence, the album represents a statement of intent, a declaration that these future heroes are ready to take on the world, and have all the tools with which to do so. Not only is ‘This Is The Six’ one of the best debut releases in recent memory, it may also turn out to be one of the most important.”

02.) Every Time I Die – ‘Ex Lives’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“Listening to ‘Ex Lives’ five or ten times won’t do this album any justice. Every listen uncovers another gem, as with all ETID albums, it is the longevity of the music that will prove to be the stand-out factor here. ‘Ex Lives’ will still sound as fresh and powerful in five years time. Another stellar album from the band who simply don’t miss.”

01.) Converge – ‘All We Love We Leave Behind’

Rating:

What we said about it:
“‘All We Love We Leave Behind’ is brilliant. There aren’t enough words to describe how good this record is, I just hope that everyone who reads this review and is intrigued goes and listens. I can promise that you will not be disappointed and, as a final, exciting note, where do Converge go next? Can this be bettered?”
