Rating:

Now on its thirteenth installment in the the whole Punk Goes… compilation series, the albums have become a regular occurrence in the scene. Though these cover albums are meant to be just good fun, showing a band’s adaptation of some popular work, they should always try and stay somewhat true to the original yet brand their own identity into the flesh.

I’m not quite sure how to go about reviewing this, so I’ll just dive right in. ‘One Big Happy!’ is a three-way split between up-and-coming pop-punk acts The Dollyrots and Patent Pending under the watchful eye of Bowling For Soup. Since this is being released on BFS‘s own record label, I can imagine them acting as mentors to these guys Also, both bands are going on tour with BFS, so I guess that this is album would be a cool little souvenir of the show too. ‘One Big Happy!’ has each band covers two of the others songs as well as releasing a brand new one of their own, which is a neat little way of getting to know each band.

In aid of Cheltenham based charity WellChild, ‘This Is A Popscene #1′ is primarily a laudable compliation seeking to raise funds for an important and utterly deserving cause. Yet, as if this motive weren’t merit enough, this release also proves to bring together a succession of joyously upbeat tracks which can help to ease perhaps even the most grievous of troubles.

Rating:

To be completely honest, most ‘tribute’ albums are largely forgetable affairs. Although to hear a band knocking out a celebration of one of their influences can be undeniably fun, a lot of the time it all seems a bit pointless, especially if nothing new is brought to the table. Regrettably, ‘ZZ Top: A Tribute From Friends’ is certainly no exception to this common rule.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have reunited for ‘Paul’ a sci-fi, comedy adventure. They star as geeks who (stupidly) decide to travel to the heart of America’s UFO epicentre. Whilst there, they fortuitously meet an alien named Paul (the name itself is guaranteed to cause a few laughs), and as in most comedies nowadays, an eventful road trip supervenes. Like any decent road movie, a pretty good soundtrack is a must. Not only is the ‘Paul’ soundtrack an auditory gem (it spans genres such as soul, rock, punk and reggae) but, in harmony with the aliens/outer-space/geek theme, each track exemplifies a nod to science fiction.

‘Hilarious Consequences’ is the brainchild of Babak Ganjei. He’s been creating comic strips in between touring and recording the follow-up album to Wet Paint‘s ‘It Rots’, and the strips have been appearing in Stool Pigeon. ‘Hilarious Consequences’ is his first graphic novel and a soundtrack has been released to it. Featured on the 11-track compilation are names like The Bronsteins, Big Deal, Wet Paint and Matthew Tong of Bloc Party fame. So, how does the soundtrack rate and will it make a big difference alongside the novel?
