People like to dive so deeply into sub-genres of metal that bands almost start to have their own label to themselves, like ‘extreme black melodic metal’ or ‘nu-thrash metalcore’, but more particularly bands that are tarnished with the ‘gimmick’ brush get singled out even more so. We’ve seen viking metal, pirate Metal, K-pop metal but now goblin metal heroes Nekrogoblikon have returned to European shores in support of last year’s ‘Heavy Meta’.

Nothing like the sound of some gruff rock ‘n’ roll infused with heavy punk; quite a variation for 5-piece The Bastard Sons from York. Their ‘Roads’ EP in itself has enough grit that if you tried to sing along it would probably feel like the equivalent of swallowing sandpaper. You’re struck with terse lyrics which just emphasise the vocal abilities of frontman JJ. Most of the tracks on the EP hit you with a wall of aggression which, when used in the right way, can be heavily effective with the audience, and this band have just the right amount of attitude to pull it off.
