FEATURE: The MySpace Generation: Where Are They Now?

In February, the social media giant that is Facebook celebrated their 12 year anniversary. Back before the days when Facebook ruled the roost (yeah, we’re going back a bit now), MySpace was the social media daddy.

Sure, if you were a regular MySpace user, you probably recall the intense amounts of huge fake hair with multiple colours, the range of ‘scene’ names where you’d include anything mildly gory or dangerous if it wasn’t “RAWR”, whore trains, a plethora of bulletins asking for PC4PC/S4S/W4W/etc or telling you to repost something or you’ll die, amongst others. However, one of the things that kept MySpace such a interesting prospect from its inception to its dwindling demise from about 2008 onwards was what it did for music.

Can two girls really change the way music is created? One of the most interesting albums to grace the music industry, ‘Tonight’, is Millionaires first album in their six years of activity. To sum it up, they’re not quite what you would expect, but then again, if you think a quick introduction to GarageBand will make you a success then you deserve every bit of criticism.

Known to be more of a pair of party animals than anything close to the form of respectable musicians, Millionaires have received more than their fair share of hate from the music scene since they hit the scene back in 2007/2008. Recently reduced down from a trio, the two remaining party girls and sisters Melissa and Allison Green have gone and released a free-to-download mixtape, aptly titled ‘Your Girl Does Party’, tiding over ’til the release of their debut full-length for the fans a little longer.

SINGLE: Millionaires – Stay The Night

Release Date: July 25th, 2010
Label: B-Unique Records
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/millionaires

Rating:

Often on the pedestal of abuse and ridicule, Millionaires have never been a respected model in the music industry. Their music created for controversy and fun through basic music creating software GarageBand, it’s hard to see how they’d gain much respect at all. But maybe that’s not what it’s all about for them. Maybe Millionaires just follow that familiar saying Cyndi Lauper once said, “girls just wanna have fun”.

‘Stay The Night’ is a recycle bin makeshift of almost every single pop song in the charts today. You’ve got your simple 4/4 synthetic beat intertwined with electro-pop fill, autotuned vocals, simple vocals suggesting sexual connotations and activities, and of course a catchy chorus hook. They know the basic forumla for pop success and flaunt it.

EP: Millionaires – Just Got Paid, Let’s Get Laid

Release Date: June 23rd, 2009
Label: Decaydance
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/millionaires

Rating:

Millionaires are apparently the hottest new electro-pop trio to cause controversy across the US. Sisters Allison Green and Melissa Marie, and friend Dani Artaud are fresh off the Huntington Beach ‘scene’ scene. Since 2007 they have released two EPs, with ‘Just Got Paid, Let’s Get Laid’ being their debut since being signed by Decaydance in Summer 2009.

If you can imagine the worst, most painful thing your ears have ever had to endure you still can’t imagine the travesty Millionaires are. The ridiculousness of these scene girls isn’t just annoying but causes anger to course through mine and undoubtedly so many other’s very veins. Following a minute long conversation interlude, the opening title track begins with cliche electro beats… and that’s when I immediately want to turn it off. The trio have absolutely no substance to their lyrics which normally wouldn’t matter too much, but the song sounds like it could have been written by a 10 year old – that’s if a 10 year old had the filthiest mouth known to man. The melody is bland beyond belief and a complete waste of four minutes.

‘Alcohol’ is a catchier tune mirroring the sound of fellow scene slut Uffie. With a dub-step breakdown slammed right in the middle, this song is much more like what you’d expect from a Decaydance esque act. The rampantly alcoholic trio invite you to “Get fucked up” with this 80’s sounding electro club anthem. Unfortunately this is the only slight, and I mean complete emphasis on the word ‘slight’, highlight of the EP.

Millionaires are definitely one of those ‘bands’ who are only about the hype they’ve seemed to garner upon themselves. They’ve certainly caused a stir, but let’s hope their minute of fame will soon die and take them along with it.
