The full-length debut from Aussie quartet ME, titled ‘Even The Odd Ones Out’, is one of flamboyance, ambition and real imagination, yet it still might leave you a little cold. Opening track, ‘Hoo Ha’, sets the tone for the rest of the record; it’s a song which sounds like Queen mixed with a sprinkling of new indie bands like fun. and with some orchestral stuff thrown in for good measure. It’s kind of bizarre yet it works rather well, although you have to replay the track a few times to have any appreciation for its elegance and unique sound.

As I return to the gloomy skies of Manchester for my ominous looking fourth year at university, what better way to kick the semester off than by going to see one of my favourite bands of all time, Motion City Soundtrack. Having not long released their fifth studio album, ‘Go’, the band are eager for the fans to hear their new tunes in a live environment. Not to mention that the gig was moved from the roomy Academy 2 to the much smaller venue of Academy 3, which is a bonus because MCS thrive in a cosy and intimate environment.

Scottish rock outfit Twin Atlantic seem to steadily ascending popularity to stand side-by-side by their local counterparts Biffy Clyro following the success brought to them off the back of their latest full-length, ‘Free’. Slowly but surely conquering both sides of the atlantic in equal measure (see what I did there?), their set at HMV Ritz in Manchester may be their last one their before their mission of global success engages.

ME are a band from Melbourne who seem to be everywhere: you open a copy of NME and they’re there in the new bands section. They’re even gracing the pages of the Guardian, which isn’t a surprise when many people have compared them to Queen. Kerrang! have even described them as “essentially Queen if every single member was Freddie Mercury“. This band have spent the last six months supporting an array of bands, ranging from Kasabian to Evanescence and Panic! At The Disco; quite a diverse collection of fanbases.
