England’s biggest metal festival, Bloodstock Open Air, is one that attracts all varieties of heavy loving fans thanks to its broad spread of bands across many metal genres. Boasting an average attendance of around 10,000 people it has the appeal of being big, but not too big. This year’s edition features something for older fans in King Diamond, something for younger fans in Lamb Of God, and something for flat out psychos in Slayer.

In the decade since the group began as a project for chief guitarist Kostas Karamitroudis or, as fans will know him, Gus G, European heavy metal has stuck by its roots and delivered what its fans enjoy. Whether it be Nordic brutality or Finnish goth metal, each purveyor of the genre has time and time again produced an album not dissimilar to its predecessor, and have enjoyed warm success in their home country. Firewind are no exception to this rule, creating six albums of unrelenting power metal over the course of their career and that’s fine because they do it just as well as any other.

NEWS: The Mars Volta and others join Sonisphere 2011 line-up!

The Mars Volta are to perform their one and only UK show of 2011 at this year’s Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth. Alongside them, Opeth, Killing Joke, Four Year Strong, The Black Dahlia Murder, Black Tide, Watain, Firewind, Rise To Remain, Alestorm, Six Hour Sundown and The Treatment have also joined the line-up.
