Like a high fibre diet, Electric Six are churning out shit on a regular basis. Almost every October, it’s a new album, and every December they tour the university towns of Europe. This pattern just screams a contractual obligation to a record label, and that’s exactly what the last few albums have felt like; an obligation. So, here’s album number eleven (that’s right, eleven), aptly titled ‘Bitch, Don’t Let Me Die!’, most likely because, if Metropolis Records were to drop Electric Six, they would most likely starve to death.

ALBUM: Electric Six – Mustang

Rating:

Let’s be honest, Electric Six aren’t ever going to be as interesting or as appealing as they were ten years ago when they released songs like ‘Gay Bar’ and ‘Danger! High Voltage’. However, they’ve kept plugging away as a band and a decade down the line here they are with album number nine, ‘Mustang’. It’s one that’s fairly engrossing up until a point, but one which fades into the distance pretty fast. It’s a record that reminds us of how irrelevant certain bands have become actually and how quickly the industry churns out the new and barfs out the old.

Electric Six seem to be making a habit of coming back this side of the pond. Year after year they have returned to the UK with a brand new album, this year being no exception. They seem to have left their disco sound behind and concentrated on a more 80s and techno feel on their new effort, ‘Heartbeats And Brainwaves’.

Unless you’ve been following the band since their beginnings, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking Electric Six more or less disappeared following the release of ‘Gay Bar’ and ‘Danger! High Voltge’. However, the band are on a UK headline tour in support of album number eight ‘Heartbeats AND Brainwaves!’ where we caught up with frontman Dick Valentine, talking about the record and more.

“GIRL! I WANNA TAKE YOU TO A GAY BAR! WANNA TAKE YOU TO A GAY BAR! GAY BAR! GAY BAR!” Oh 2003, you were a good year. Since then, Electric Six went on to make another eight albums. That’s right, eight! Now, I’m an avid fan of Electric Six and you should be too, for there is so much more to them than ‘Gay Bar’ and ‘Danger! High Voltage’. If you don’t believe me, then take a listen to some of their other equally as good songs, like ‘I Buy The Drugs’, ‘Down To McDonnelzzz’ and ‘Synthesizer’.
