FEATURE: 50 albums that turn 10 in 2017!

A decade is, especially in the music world, quite a long time, even if it does seem to just flash by and feel like just a month. Ten years ago, back in 2007, things were very different; MySpace was still the kingpin of social media, Bring Me The Horizon were dodging bottles whilst supporting Killswitch Engage night after night, and Give It A Name and Taste Of Chaos were still a thing.

Along with all the nostalgic memories, 2007 was also host to a plethora of great records, some being the first major step for a lot of bands towards the lofty heights of their career that they’re revelling in today.

Of course there are hundreds, but we filtered together 50 great albums that turn 10-years-old this year to remember those modern classics.

NOTE: These albums may bring intense levels and high frequencies of smiles, jumping, involuntary head nodding/banging and limb movements, and uncontrollable happiness.

Rating:

Despite the fact that, as with most new sub-genres and sub-strains of metal, saturation point swiftly seemed to strip deathcore of any creative merit, it’s all too easy to forget that at one time the likes of Montreal sextet Despised Icon were legitimately pioneering. An exhilarating collision between street-tough hardcore vibes and death metal extremity, this fearsome mash-up paved the way for a new wave of brutality which continues to inform many of today’s emerging talent (even if the sound has been somewhat hijacked by the infinitely less convincing Emmure/Attila generation).

Rating:

It was only three years ago that Impericon Festival decided to extend its touring across Europe into the UK, making itself a cosy home in Manchester. Now, in 2016, it’s reached out for a second UK date in London too. Sadly, Manchester saw a downgrade of venue size from Academy to Academy 2, which holds less than half the capacity intended, but the ferocity and mosh madness remains absolutely untainted.

INTERVIEW: Despised Icon (02/05/2016)

Few bands within death metal today are as revered and loved as Montreal’s Despised Icon, and it’s even more of rarity to see that such a level of admiration and devotion not only solidifies, but swells and grows since the band announced their plans to go on an indefinite hiatus back in 2010. Four years later, the Canadian heavy hitters returned for a few one-off reunion shows, and then some album anniversary dates the following year.

Now, in 2016, though not fully returned in the respect of a full-time touring band, Despised Icon are officially back for good. Not only that, but they double-slap surprised us with news of a brand new album to drop in July, titled ‘Beast’, which no doubt is going to provide exactly what it says on the tin.
