Rating:

Steadily drifting away from their formative EBM roots, the expansion of Combichrist‘s sound and a move towards more organic, metallically driven territory may be tailor made to fill rock-club dance floors across the globe, yet the nu-metal reveling ‘This Is Where Death Begins’, whilst largely inoffensive, is a woefully dated record:

ALBUM: Combichrist – We Love You

Release Date: March 25th, 2014
Label: Out Of Line/Metropolis Records

Twitter: www.twitter.com/combichristarmy

Rating:

‘No Redemption’, Combichrist‘s 2012 album and accompanying soundtrack to the DmC: Devil May Cry video game, proved somewhat polarising. Dropping much of the intensely danceable aggrotech electronics for which the Andy LaPlegua project was well known, ‘No Redemption’ laid on heavy guitars in a way which disappointed some long-term fans. Hot on the heels of the deliberately varied Evolution Tour and that genre changing soundtrack album, Combichrist could have seemingly gone in any direction for their latest studio album, ‘We Love You’.

Rating:

Despite stirring up controversy amongst their fans, Combichrist‘s sixth full-length is an industrial assault that shouldn’t majorly upset their ‘army’. What may prove too much to take is the apparent ‘selling out’. ‘No Redemption’ is the soundtrack for the newest title in the Devil May Cry video game series and is also receiving a hefty dose of promotion from the ever-polarising Hot Topic chain. It’s the latter that’s proving to be the bitterest pill to swallow for some fans. Anyone remember back when it was all about the music?

Industrial metal isn’t an easy genre for a musician to crack, but when it’s done right it sounds amazing in all sort of ways. With a notable career behind them and a catalogue of multiple albums to be proud of, we caught up with Combichrist during the UK leg of their Evolution tour – a retrospective touring campaign where the band peformed tracks from throughout their career so far. We spoke about the tour itself, writing songs for video games and film sound tracks, progress on their forthcoming new record and more:

Rating:

Waiting outside Moho Live on a gorgeous sunny Wednesday, I feel somewhat a minority. Donning my Primark chequered shirt and jeans, I stand out horrifically in a queue of cyber goths which are dressed head to toe in black and leather, with chains and spikes coming out of their shoulders and ears. I may have got one or two odd looks, but none of that mattered when we were all inside the venue, dancing along to some dangerously loud industrial metal.
