We all know that the mainstream in the last few years have been dominated by manufactured boy bands, passing themselves off as more than mere pop bands by their ability to play instruments, and in some cases not even then. We all know who I’m talking about. They took pop-punk and soiled its good name, and warped it beyond recognition. However, something seems to have kicked in in 2011, are we growing tired of this mainstream bullshit fad? Probably not, but growing in the underground is a movement that is growing stronger and stronger by the day and is even starting to make its push for broader horizons.

On their latest visit to the UK, Miss May I seem to be drawing in the crowds. Whilst Sound Control is quite a small sized venue, the amount of people queuing up outside is impressive, so much so that the roadies have to battle through the mass of eager fans to actually get back to the tour bus.

Release Date: July 19th, 2011
Label: Fearless Records

Rating:

In 2010, Parisian pop-punkers Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! brought out their debut, ‘Something For Nothing’. They gained a modest troupe of fans with it, but now after being signed by Fearless Records, they are surely going to take off. Playing catchy pop-punk melodies weaved together with crunching breakdowns, they don’t play particularly complex music, but they do it well. There’s definitely a Four Year Strong ‘Rise Or Die Trying’-era sound about it, with the key difference that they play in a much lower tuning (drop B), which for a band of their genre gives them a slightly heavier edge whilst still maintaining the fun feel of pop-punk. It’s quite like Curious George, only with chainsaws and tequila.
