All girl UK quartet Evarose have followed up their exciting debut release ‘Creation Divide’ with their new EP, ‘Elements’. It tells of a development in their sound becoming more technical and mature, whilst still maintaining their angst-ridden attitude that grabs your attention and keeps hold of it across the record. If the band manage to keep up to their high levels of music releases in the future, it won’t be long before they make a real name for themselves.

Trying to pin the Norwegian band 22 to a genre is a bit of a nightmare. According to their MySpace, they play ‘prog rock with funk spasms’, but they have also been thrown into other genres such as post rock, math rock, experimental metal and crossover prog. Now, one thing is for sure, 22 certainly don’t fit into any sort of metal vein, but if you’re a genre nazi and have the burning desire to pigeon hole every band you hear than maybe experimental psycodelic prog rock might satisfy your appetite.

Does anyone else feel the need for a new ‘New Wave Of British Heavy Metal’? Sounding like contemporaries of the iconic Iron Maiden, Monument‘Rock The Night’ is the band’s début release and wastes no time with introductions, throwing the listener straight into a tireless 20+ minutes of galloping, head-banging and fearless fret-work.

There seems to be something about Wales. For such a relatively small country, it has an uncanny ability to churn out very successful bands from the lighter to the heavier end of the rock spectrum. Hoping to maintain this trend are Aberystwyth based four-piece, My Favourite Runner Up, whose personal brand of upbeat pop-punk is not only more than pleasing, but is really impressive as a second release.

In keeping with our current cultural malaise and well overstaying its welcome, acoustic pop is doing pretty well for itself. Try-hard gingers Ed Sheeran, Newton Faulker and Ben Howard command commercial success, if not hampered by their dislike by the critics. It’s in this atmosphere we greet Holly Drummond, another indie act with an acoustic guitar to add to the pile.

Dance music and rock; so often a concoction with all the grim joylessness of a eunuch and a castrato having sex. Combining synths and steel strings, drops and riffs is an equation with the potential to herald the mastery of The Prodigy (who bigged this band’s vocals up), the accessibility of Head Automatica or the turgidity of Pendulum. There tends to be painfully little middle ground in what can be seen to be quite a niche genre. With a listen, ‘Generation Doom’ by Subsource is by far hanging in the lower ranks of the genre; less private club booths and smart-casual suits, more K-hole bass faces and car-boot sale RL.

Pop-punk and pop-metal have seen a steady rise in popularity in the last few years and although the market is grossly over saturated, its radio friendly lyrics and crushing beatdowns means it’s a genre that can be embraced by almost any music fan. Love it or hate it, the newest boy band moshers to splice pop and metal together are Hertfordshire lads, The City Divided.

Northampton is a pretty unhappy little town. Surrounded by awful places like Milton Keynes and Coventry, it’s the chewy, month old meat in a rotten sandwich. Hailing from this part of the world are Lay Siege, who reek of imprisonment and play like they’re trying to force their way out of solid rock.
