At a glance, you’d expect this release would appeal mainly to fans of folk genre stalwarts Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons. However, when you delve deep into the heart of it, there’s a real allure to it which will force you into repeat listening. It’s an honest and enchanting EP which is full of optimism, conveyed by fascinating melodies and scintillating harmonies which leave the hairs on the back of your neck giving a standing ovation. All the way through the twenty minute EP, there’s this magical quality that leaves you craving more and with its sombre and atmospheric tones. The more subtle the sound, the better for this band.

Firstly, I’d like to point out that I won’t be using words like ‘dark’, ‘evil’ or ‘raw’. I’d really like to, but that would be far too obvious. What I will say is this: From the outset this record is unsettling, opening to screeching feedback which remains a constant theme throughout, returning to haunt you again and again.

Rating:

I will happily admit that I know nothing about the recession, but I do know that it’s hard on everyone, especially so on the bands that are just starting up. Not only do they have to risk losing their job so they can go on tour, but if they do make it out on tour, they hardly make any money because people can’t spare much cash to buy their merch. From what I’ve read, it seems the Cold Summer have worked their socks off to get their latest EP ‘Wake’ out there for us to listen to, so the least we can do is give it a courtesy listen.

ALBUM: Architects – Daybreaker

Release Date: May 28th, 2012
Label: Century Media
Website: www.architectsofficial.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/architectsuk
Twitter: www.twitter.com/architectsuk

Rating:

Despite the huge success brought to Brighton’s Architects with their 2011 full-length ‘The Here And Now’, the album most certainly polarised opinions within their fanbase, critised by the elitists as being far too commercial and radio rock. If you look at the album properly though, it wasn’t really that mainstream. It held some rather heavy hitters, just listen to ‘Day In Day Out’, ‘The Blues’ and ‘Delete, Rewind’. Still, with new effort ‘Daybreaker’, the band stated they’d be returning to their roots, not feeling comfortable being a band who had tracks that comfortably slotted into daytime radio.

Label: Unsigned

Twitter: www.twitter.com/peepshowband

Rating:

‘Brand New Breed’ opens with an intro full of news report audio where we hear the phrase “new world order” a bunch of times. This would usually either remind you of American wrestling or make you think that this band is incredibly pretentious. Actually, none of the above, it gives Peepshow‘s new album a pretty atmospheric opening if not a slightly misleading one.

Rating:

Alternative rock quartet Boy Jumps Ship hailing from the North East of the UK have followed up 2011’s ‘Engines’ with a new EP, ‘Be Good. Be Gracious.’. The growth between these EPs is noticeable, with the latest release boasting instrumental work similar to that of heavyweights Biffy Clyro and a vocal approach like a rougher version of the now defunct Francesqa‘s Ashley Wilkie. This makes for 4 tracks of impressive work that leave the listener wishing the band had made a full-length album.
