Ghostfest is Leeds’ annual celebration of the very best and most exciting bands that the hardcore and metal scene has to offer today. Now in its seventh year, the festival has come from humble beginnings to one of the most anticipated events on the UK festival circuit. Waiting outside Moho Live on a gorgeous sunny Wednesday, I feel somewhat a minority. Donning my Primark chequered shirt and jeans, I stand out horrifically in a queue of cyber goths which are dressed head to toe in black and leather, with chains and spikes coming out of their shoulders and ears. I may have got one or two odd looks, but none of that mattered when we were all inside the venue, dancing along to some dangerously loud industrial metal.

To put it simply; Stillbust‘s new ‘Pile O’ Knives’ EP is 15 minutes of passionate aggressive hardcore. ALBUM: The Word Alive – Life Cycles

Release Date: July 3rd, 2012

Rating:

When Tyler “Telle” Smith joined Arizona’s The Word Alive back in 2008 in his debut effort as a frontman, the band’s popularity slowly began to soar release after release. 2010’s debut full-length ‘Deceiver’ displayed a great promise and rejuvenation in a genre that recently is all too often lacking originality and depth. The escalating hype to see if they can maintain this promise with sophomore is undoubtedly a huge weight on the band’s shoulders, but thankfully they deliver once again.

ALBUM: Periphery – Periphery II

Release Date: July 3rd, 2012
Label: Century Media Records

Rating:

Being branded rather firmly as the masterminds of djent almost from the very beginning of their career, it’s not unreasonable to say that Periphery have much to live up to with their sophomore release, and also a perhaps all too restricting bracket in which too impress the hoardes of fans which know what they want from this so in vogue of genres. Fortunatley, this Maryland sextet have foregoed any pre-conceived notions of what they are ‘supposed’ to sound like, and delivered an album that both expands and improves on their own unique musical identity.

Rating:

Back in 2010, we thought we’d heard everything from Abandon All Ships; the five piece, hailing from Toronto, delivered a stunning, albeit a very alternative effort with ‘Geeving’. Their mix of trance, dance and metal music boarded them onto the ship that bands such as Asking Alexandria and, more famously, The Devil Wears Prada were proudly sailing.
