ALBUM: Band Of Horses – Mirage Rock

Release Date: September 17th, 2012
Label: Subpop Records
Website: www.bandofhorses.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/bandofhorses
Twitter: www.twitter.com/bandofhorses

Rating:

‘Mirage Rock’ is the fourth studio album from alternative country rockers, Band Of Horses who have managed to split their fanbase, rather unfortunately, right down the middle. In some circles, it has been hailed as a triumph; a fitting modern testament to the American storyteller rock genre. But, others think there’s too much country and not enough rock. Although, the band with their previous offerings has made the otherwise stale genre hugely accessible and likeable again, ‘Mirage Rock’ is certainly a polarising offering.

ALBUM: Negative Pegasus – Looming

Release Date: September 17th, 2012
Label: Smalltown America
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/negativepegasus
Twitter: www.twitter.com/negativepegasus

Rating:

This 3 piece from Brighton describe themselves as ‘hard psych’. To be honest, I literally have no idea what that means. ‘Looming’, the debut 8 track mini-album from Negative Pegasus, clocks in at just over half an hour long, the majority of it being taken up by unnecessary feedback and way too much reverb. That being said, there’s also an awful lot that I like about this album.

Playing early in the morning didn’t deter Belgian post-hardcore act Campus from putting on an intense, energetic live show and revealing why they are gaining as much attention as they are in mainland Europe. We caught up with them after their set and got an insight as to what it is that makes Campus, what they thought of the set themselves and more:

Website: www.motionlessinwhite.net
Facebook: www.facebook.com/motionlessinwhite
Twitter: www.twitter.com/miwband

Rating:

Plastering the pages of Kerrang! Magazine, major tours across the UK and a second full-length on the way; it’s safe to say that 2012 has been a good year for gothic metalcore outfit, Motionless In White. Selling out pretty much the entirety of their first ever headline UK tour, we caught the guys at Manchester’s The Roadhouse, which was also sold out, turning the 300 into a sweatbox.

Website: www.iwrestledabearonce.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/iwrestledabearonce
Twitter: www.twitter.com/iwabo

Rating:

For all those who didn’t know by their name alone, iwrestledabearonce are easily one of the most eccentric metal bands around today. Even if you haven’t listened to them yet, simply take a look at some of their song titles and this will easily confirm it early enough for you. Now, heading onto their first headline UK tour, and their first time on British shores since the temporary/permament (yet to be confirmed) change of frontwoman from Krysta Cameron to Courtney LaPlante, let’s see if they can maintain their reputation.

ALBUM: Freeze The Atlantic – Speakeasy

Release Date: September 17th, 2012
Label: Alcopop! Records
Website: www.freezetheatlantic.co.uk
Facebook: www.facebook.com/freezetheatlantic
Twitter: www.twitter.com/fta_band

Rating:

Striding confidently from the ashes of such deceased British heavyweights as Reuben and Hundred Reasons, the simmering hype behind Freeze The Atlantic is not only testament to the continuing influence and popularity of the members former outfits, but also to simply how long it has taken them to deliver ‘Speakeasy’. With the record at last in our eager mits, however, we are treated to a timely affirmation as to the oozing talent of these often unfairly overlooked musicians.

ALBUM: Charlie Indestructible – This City Needs A Hero

Release Date: September 17th, 2012
Label: Unsigned
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/charlieindestructible
Twitter: www.twitter.com/cindestructible

Rating:

‘This City Needs A Hero’ is a strange record. At best, it reminds you of Finch and the great post-hardcore bands of that ilk. At worst, it reminds you of how cringe worthy bands like The Blackout are when trying to sound profound or interesting at all. Even though the album art looks like a future sequel to Halo and the title of the record is one that Fightstar must have surely knocked around at some point in time, it’s a fairly intriguing listen first time around.

Rating:

Danko Jones have consistently released good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n’ roll records for the last 15 years, so fans know exactly what to expect from latest effort ‘Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue’; catchy choruses with exploding riffs, topped off with Jones‘ trademark rough and raspy vocals about girls, girls and more girls. This time around, Danko Jones are reinforced by legendary Rocket From The Crypt drummer, Atom Willard, fresh from recent stints with The Offspring and Angels & Airwaves.

It has been a long 5 years since Down last released any new material, so to hear that they were to put out a new EP was a relief to many of their dedicated fans. ‘The Purple EP’ will not disappoint those dedicated fans either, Down are back to what they do best; churning out huge NOLA style sludge based riffs.
