Last month, Welsh emotive hardcore crew Casey released their incredible sophomore album, ‘Where I Go When I Am Sleeping’, and it’s generating some serious hype. With their debut ‘Love Is Not Enough’ revolving predominantly around the subject of love in many contexts and forms, ‘Where I Go…’ is something else.
Instead, with solipsism still certainly within the frame, vocalist and lyricist Tom Weaver entered territories related to his personal health, each being as heart-wrenching as anything they’ve penned prior and, with plenty of years of experience under their belt come record number two, they’ve managed to ebb and weave those tales into an almost ethereal state.
Amidst their first proper headline UK tour, we caught with them at the London date, and chatted to guitarists Liam Torrance and Toby Evans backstage to discuss how the album came together, life on the road, and where they plan to go from here.
DP!: This is the first Casey headline tour. How has it been going so far?
L: It’s really surpassed anything that we thought it would be like. We didn’t really have huge expectations for what the shows would be like, and we only found out about the ticket sales right before we left, so there was a lot of anticipation and a lot of worry as to how some of them were going to go, especially as our support bands have flown so far (Rarity and Endless Heights, from Canada and Australia respectively). But, from the get go it’s just been rammed. We’ve had shows sell out on the door, with walk-ins and stuff.
T: Because this is our first ever big headline run, we felt a bit awkward beforehand because we couldn’t judge it by anything we’d done before at all, and we had no idea how it was going to turn out.
DP!: You’ve just got back from Europe, how do their crowds compare with ours?
L: We spoke to some kids in Germany who had never seen us before, and I think that’s what it’s all about, even though we’re headlining this tour we’re making new fans as well. Tom asked every night “Hands up who hasn’t seen us before”, so it’s nice to headline, but still feel like we’re not in a way!
T: I think their scene is a lot more together. There’s no sort of judgment between different crowds of people. Everyone just comes together and just has a good time. I think the UK’s lost that a little bit over the years, however, it does seem to be putting itself back together. All these new bands are coming through, and there’s a lot more smaller bands getting bigger. It’s a hard industry anyway, but to see so many people supporting smaller bands is so great.
DP!: So how have the new songs been received live?
T: The release shows we did were crazy, because the album had only been out for like two weeks, and they were singing all the lyrics and stuff. It was massive.
L: We did a show in The Fighting Cocks in Kingston, and we did an in-store in the day which was crazy. It was rammed, and the show in the evening was sold out as well, and, like Toby said, for the album to have only been out for those two weeks and to hear kids singing the lyrics back and going crazy, it was nuts. Same as this tour, the cycle has massively surpassed anything we’ve done before. We’ve got a really good PR team, so it feels like it’s been effortless, like we haven’t had to do much work.
T: Beforehand, when this album got announced, there was a lot of planning and a lot of preparation. Compared to when our first album was released, it was quite rushed and we were trying to find ourselves musically and get into the industry. But, I think with this one, because we had a lot more time and a lot more preparation, it’s given us a step forward.
DP!: How did you guys meet Endless Heights and Rarity?
L: To be truthful, I hadn’t heard of Rarity, but I’d heard of Endless Heights. Tom put both those bands forward to us. We had a shortlist of bands we wanted to take out, and we sat down and listened to them. We’d never met them before, but we really liked the diversity. Rarity have that sort of pop-punk edge to them. We didn’t want kids to come to the show and just see three of the same bands. For me, personally, I’d be so bored with that. Those two bands just really fit the bill. Really, really good dudes.
DP!: When you went into making this record, were you wanting to follow on from ‘Love Is Not Enough’, or were you wanting to do something new?
T: I think there were elements of the musical side that we brought forward into ‘Where I Go…’, but I think it’s developed into something else now. ‘Love Is Not Enough’ wasn’t immature as such, but I feel like it was kind of rushed, and I think because we had a lot more time to plan this album out, we got to try out more things, and we flew Brad Wood out from California to produce and record the album. He did his job just amazingly. He smashed it.
L: I think with ‘Love Is Not Enough’, just like Toby said, we rushed it a bit. We did an EP, and then we said we had to do a record, so we just sort of crammed ourselves into the studio and just wrote a bunch of songs and put them out. But that album gave us a really high stepping stone into what we do now, and we wrote ‘Where I Go…’ really organically in a practice room. It was definitely different for us, and really scary as well, because we didn’t really know how people would take to it.
T: It is different. There’s a lot of diversity on the album. There’s a lot more singing. There’s a couple of instrumental parts. It’s quite ambitious for us, but I’m really proud of how it’s turned out.
DP!: Is there any track on the album that you’re most proud of?
L: ‘Fluorescents’. It was the first track that we wrote, and I feel personally that’s the only track that’s stayed how we originally wrote it. With so many of the other tracks, things changed in the studio, we changed up guitar parts, but ‘Fluorescents’ as a first song gave us an idea of what we wanted the record to sound like.
T: With that track as well, it was premiered on BBC Radio 1 when we were on tour with Counterparts and The Amity Affliction last year. We were in Belgium, and we were all backstage, listening to it on a phone. We all had butterflies and stuff. It was definitely a special moment. But, for me personally, I like the title-track, ‘Where I Go When I Am Sleeping’. That’s like my roots, I write instrumental music, post-rock stuff, so I like the instrumental interludes we have on the album. For the Counterparts/Amity tour, we used interludes to start the set and merge some of the songs together, and I think they make the album flow really well.
DP!: What music are you guys listening to at the moment? Anyone we should check out?
L: In the van we don’t really listen to anything heavy. We’ve been listening to SZA, she’s put out a new record that’s sort of slow R&B trap stuff.
T: I listen to CHVRCHES.
L: Paramore seems to come on quite a lot too.
DP!: And, finally, what’s next for you guys now that the album’s out?
L: We’re doing some festivals in the summer which should be really cool.
T: We’ve just announced Summerblast Festival in Germany.
L: We can’t quite say some of the things we’ve got coming up, but we’ll be travelling quite far in July and in November, hopefully, so it’ll be a busy year.
T: Even I don’t know exactly where we’re going.
