Toronto punks Pkew Pkew Pkew are back with their album ‘Optimal Lifestyles’ that lays out a journal of living in their hometown and the futility of life there including the hellishly-accelerated rent increases and gentrification.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Mike Warne was on hand to celebrate the band signing to Dine Alone Records and Big Scary Monsters for ‘Optimal Lifestyles’ by picking his three top albums from each label.

ARKELLS – ‘JACKSON SQUARE’

DINE ALONE RECORDS

I was becoming friends and recording my own stuff with the drummer (Tim) from Arkells around the time they were searching for a label—ending up with Dine Alone, and making this album—so it was an exciting time for them and I got to hear stories about it and really be a ground level fan of a band that would become a great band. Also, our good pal, and producer of our first record, Jon Drew, produced Jackson Square and he is one of the best.

SINGLE MOTHERS – ‘NEGATIVE QUALITIES’

DINE ALONE RECORDS

“This album is one of the best albums by a Toronto band EVER. The songwriting is amazing. I think this album inspired a lot of other bands from the city. And, it’s yet another album that Jon Drew worked on.”

MONEEN – ‘THE RED TREE’

DINE ALONE RECORDS

I listened to this band a lot when I was in University. ‘The Red Tree’ is probably my fave of their records. Real cool guitar parts and real cool back and forth singing.

BEACH SLANG – ‘THE THINGS WE DO TO FIND PEOPLE WHO FEEL LIKE US’

BIG SCARY MONSTERS

This album reminds me of a bunch of my favourite bands in an exciting and original way. It’s kind of comforting, if that makes any sense. It suits a lot of moods and that’s probably why I listen to it so much.

JOYCE MANOR – ‘OF ALL THINGS I WILL SOON GROW TIRED’

BIG SCARY MONSTERS

I love short records, and this is one is perfectly crafted. It’s so easy to put on and listen to the whole thing. It’s weird, but to me, this is just one long song that I like. I don’t think I’ve ever not listened to the whole thing and I think that makes it a really special album.

CASPIAN – ‘DUST AND DISQUIET’

BIG SCARY MONSTERS

I’ve always loved listening to post-rock music while I read. This record has some really cool and intense moments on it. I would love to see them live one day.
