2014 sadly signalled the untimely demise of melodic hardcore quintet Climates following just a matter of weeks after the release of their final full-length. After former members Sam Bowden (guitar), Chris Pritchard (guitar), Max Dawson (bass), and Matt Powles (drums) enlisted the help of vocalist Kaya Tarsus, Lincoln’s Blood Youth were ready to rise from the ashes of their former selves.
‘Inside My Head’ follows just a matter of months after album ‘Body Clocks’ was released under their former alias, and reassuringly bears no signs of hasty preparation. Released back in March, ‘Cold Sweat’ was first to whet listeners’ appetites and propelled the band to new heights, landing them a slot at Download Festival and headline tour alongside pop-punks Trashboat.
‘Piece By Piece’ wonderfully encapsulates Blood Youth‘s brand of melodic hardcore, coupling weighty groove laden riffs with pop fuelled hooks. The track emulates metalcore titans Atreyu, and is a fitting opener for what is to come.
What’s truly impressive is how much ground the band are able cover within the finite space of 5 tracks. Mosh pit anthem ‘Dead Space’ is carried by its addictive pop sensibilities and break neck percussive blasts. The track’s towering chorus is inescapable, with vocalist Tarsus yelling “Your shadow follows me”.
On the other end of the spectrum, ‘Cold Sweat’ is straight to blow the doors down, chiming in with some gritty distorted bass. Its music and lyrics appear to be thematically linked as its self-depreciating narrative is mirrored in the track’s heavy intensity.
Proving that good can come from unfortunate situations and that every cloud has a silver lining, ‘Inside My Head’ presents a promising start for the quintet’s new venture. Blood Youth have fought hard the last few months, rebuilding their fan base and reimaging their sound. Fortunately, it appears to be a battle they have more than overcome.
