South Coast post-hardcore quintet Acres are back with their new vocalist Ben Lumber to offer up five tracks on their new EP, titled ‘In Sickness & Health’, through which they continue to carry forth with their tagline of creating “sad songs for sad dudes”.
Straight away it’s apparent with opener ‘Overseer’ that, if you’re already an Acres fan, it’s noticeably heavier than the band’s prior material, but as well as this still keeps elements that older fans will recognise, like heavily reverberated lead guitars.
During the EP’s lead single, ‘Miles Apart’, Lumber really shows off his vocal talent and range in this track, showcasing some beautiful harmonic layered vocals, before we return back to business as usual with ‘Gloom’. This is definitely one of the heavier tracks on the EP.
Title track ‘In Sickness & Health’ stands as the band’s best material to date, – the cherry on top of and the absolute pinnacle of the EP. The song feels like a journey, all building up to a huge screamed back closing moment, complimented by a beautiful instrumental build-up.
All in all, ‘In Sickness & Health’, is a beautiful journey through the absolute talent of these five British gentlemen, and most definitely ones to watch for the future.
