DOWNLOAD 2013 PREVIEW: Kerrang!-core

Welcome to part six in a series of features previewing this year’s Download Festival. Each week, we shall be looking at a particular genre or scene that will be represented at the festival. You may have heard some of the more established bands, but these previews may introduce you to similar bands that are in the same vain.

In part six, we will be looking at bands that you might often find gracing the pages of Kerrang!, specifically those that play alternative rock and pop-punk.

30 SECONDS TO MARS

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Sunday @ 7:10PM
Who do they clash with?: A Day To Remember (Zippo), P.O.D. / Modestep (Pepsi Max), I AM I (Red Bull)
Listen: Kings & Queens (Live at Reading Festival 2011)

30 Seconds To Mars have provided us with one of the clashes of the festival thanks to their battle against A Day To Remember over on the second stage. Though a tough decision, those who choose main stage will be treated to Jared Leto‘s dreamy demeanour and an impressive live show.

HIM

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Friday @ 9:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Slipknot (Main), Black Stone Cherry (Zippo), FIDLAR / Fearless Vampire Killers (Red Bull)
Listen: Wicked Game

HIM (short for His Infernal Majesty) are one of those bands that will attract a lot of die-hard fans, and not many else. They provide an alternative to Slipknot on main stage and Black Stone Cherry on second, so if you really have to avoid those two then head over to the Pepsi Max stage at 9:00pm.

THE HIVES

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Saturday @ 9:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Iron Maiden (Main) / Rat Attack, Last Witness (Red Bull)
Listen: Tick Tick Boom (Live at Reading Festival 2012)

The Hives clash with Iron Maiden, and that’s a real shame because they truly are one of the best live bands that you’ll ever see. Their onstage antics will keep you constantly entertained and their music is catchier than the plague.

JIMMY EAT WORLD

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Saturday @ 6:20pm
Who do they clash with?: Queens Of The Stone Age (Main), Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats / Chthonic (Pepsi Max), Voodoo Six (Red Bull), Devin Townsend (Jagermeister)
Listen: The Middle (Music Video)
Why?:Jimmy Eat World? I’ve never heard of them!” Yes you have, listen to the song. Yeah, it’s THEM.

WE ARE THE OCEAN

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Friday @ 6:25pm
Who do they clash with?: Korn (Main), Volbeat (Zippo), Blood Command (Red Bull)
Listen: Machine (Music Video)
Why?: We Are The Ocean on an acoustic stage; an interesting combination. Also appearing recently on Radio 1’s Big Weekend, it seems like WATO are about to blow up, so don’t miss your chance to see them in such an intimate setting.

YOUNG GUNS

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Saturday @ 12:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Heaven’s Basement (Zippo), Crowns (Pepsi Max), Idiom (Red Bull), The Afterparty (Jagermeister)
Listen: Bones (Music Video)
Why?: Young Guns do have an awful lot of fan girls, don’t they? They’re also the perfect band for you to sit and be quiet to whilst nursing your increasingly painful hangover on Saturday morning.

FIDLAR

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 8:40pm
Who do they clash with?: Slipknot (Main), Gogol Bordello (Zippo), HIM (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Cheap Beer (Music Video)
Why?: Standing for ‘Fuck It Dog, Life’s A Risk’, FIDLAR are stealing garage rock from The Strokes and The Hives. The crowd on the Red Bull stage will be trying their hardest to be too cool to have fun, but they’ll be up against it.

PATENT PENDING

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Friday @ 2:35pm
Who do they clash with?: Asking Alexandria (Main), Uriah Heep (Zippo), Avosetta (Jagermeister)
Listen: Douchebag (Music Video)
Why?: Now that Bowling For Soup are pretty much splitting up, Patent Pending will be taking the reigns of ultra-fun pop-rock. If you’re not convinced by the video, check our own excellent review (here) and honestly tell me that you’re not intrigued.

FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 9:40pm
Who do they clash with?: Slipknot (Main), Black Stone Cherry (Zippo), HIM (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Diamond Dust & Crimson Reign (Music Video)
Why?: Truly the epitome of the term Kerrang!-core, Fearless Vampire Killers look a lot like Aiden but aren’t nearly as shit.

I DIVIDE

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Saturday @ 11:00am
Who do they clash with?: UFO (Main), Broken (Pepsi Max), Cytota (Red Bull)
Listen: Burning Out (Music Video)
Why?: Download have a habit of putting on inoffensive bands first thing in the morning. That’s exactly what you’re gonna get with I Divide; a group of lads who are stoked to be playing second stage and who’ll hopefully convince festival-goers to get into the arena first thing on Saturday.

BLITZ KIDS

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Sunday @ 11:00am
Who do they clash with?: Sacred Mother Tongue (Main), GMOS (Pepsi Max), Naked Flame (Red Bull)
Listen: Never Die (Music Video)
Why?: Very similar to I Divide mentioned just above, Blitz Kids will be out to get the blood flowing around your bloated-by-alcohol carcass on Sunday morning.

PAGE 44

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 4:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Papa Roach (Main), Dragonforce (Zippo), The Sword (Pepsi Max), Toseland (Jagermeister)
Listen: Answers (Music Video)
Why?: Page 44 were one of the stage openers on second stage last year in the vein of I Divide and Blitz Kids‘ role this year, but this time by they’re in a slightly smaller setting.

THE FIRST

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Sunday @ 11:40am
Who do they clash with?: Cancer Bats (Main), Hellyeah (Zippo), States of Panic (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Take It Back (Music Video)
Why?: The First aren’t particularly pioneering, but if you’re looking to get away from the rowdiness of Cancer Bats on Main or Hellyeah on Second then they’ll provide a fun alternative.

THE AFTERPARTY

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Saturday @ 12:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Young Guns (Main), Heaven’s Basement (Zippo), Crowns (Pepsi Max), Idiom (Red Bull)
Listen: Liar, Liar (Music Video)
Why?: The Afterparty have come under a bit of criticism thanks to their ultra-inoffensive style, and their placement against Young Guns is slightly puzzling. Nevertheless, if you want to avoid the screaming girls on main stage and watch them with the screaming girls on the acoustic stage, then why the hell not?

STRAIGHT LINES

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Saturday @ 2:40pm
Who do they clash with?: Mastodon (Main), Katatonia (Zippo), Walking Papers (Pepsi Max), Silent Screams (Red Bull)
Listen: Half Gone (Music Video)
Why?: Straight Lines have been receiving quite a lot of airtime at the moment with their psuedo-indie soundtrack. They’ll be bringing along their acoustic set to Donington this year.

HILL VALLEY HIGH

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Saturday @ 11:40am
Who do they clash with?: Red, White & Blues (Zippo), The Wild Lies (Red Bull)
Listen: All Fall Down (Music Video)
Why?: Hill Valley High‘s claim to fame is that they once supported McFly on tour, but their style is a little less mainstream.

VERSES

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 4:45pm
Who do they clash with?: Down (Main), Europe (Zippo), In This Moment (Pepsi Max), Hear Kitty Kitty (Jagermeister)
Listen: Who We Are (Music Video)
Why?: Less pop-punk, more alt rock, Verses sound like a less Scottish version of Biffy Clyro.

RAT ATTACK

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Saturday @ 9:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Iron Maiden (Main), The Hives (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Heartbeat (Music Video)
Why?: The self-confessed kings of party rock, Rat Attack have a very tough clash in prospect, but for non-Maiden fans this may be a nice surprise.

HEAR KITTY KITTY

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Friday @ 4:45pm
Who do they clash with?: Down (Main), Europe (Zippo), Verses (Red Bull)
Listen: Moody (Music Video)
Why?: You don’t want to watch Hear Kitty Kitty, trust me. Unless you’ve come to Download because you like 90s era girl bands like B*Witched, there’s nothing to see here. Move along.

RADKEY

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Sunday @ 3:30pm
Who do they clash with?: Parkway Drive (Main), Amon Amarth (Zippo), Bleed From Within (Pepsi Max), Skin (Jagermeister)
Listen: Cat & Mouse (Music Video)
Why?: Radkey look nothing like you’d expect them to. Three black dudes playing Hendrix and Zeppelin influenced rock that’s actually damn good.

AVOSETTA

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Friday @ 2:15pm
Who do they clash with?: Asking Alexandria / Architects (Main), Patent Pending (Red Bull)
Listen: Wait Your Turn (Music Video)
Why?: Avosetta are all set to be the next big thing, and their slot on the Jagermeister stage will hopefully cook up enough attention to put them on peoples’ tongues.

HOAX

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 5:30pm
Who do they clash with?: Walking Papers (Jagermeister)
Listen: Bitter Angry Fake (Music Video)
Why?: Hoax only have one song available on the net, so goodness knows how they’re gonna fill a 25 minute slot. They do, however, have the luxury of playing in a nice gap between most acts.

LONELY THE BRAVE

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Saturday @ 8:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Enter Shikari (Zippo), Kvelertak (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Official BandCamp profile
Why?: Coming on festival promoter Andy Copping’s personal recommendation, Lonely The Brave play chilled out post-rock with vocals, and so it’s a damn shame that they’re up against such tough competition on other stages.

Next week: Hardcore preview, with Cancer Bats, Converge, Kvelertak and more.
