Dead Letter Circus‘s debut album, ‘This Is The Warning’, soared to the top of the Aussie album charts, which obviously is an impressive feat indeed. Mind you, this position was once dominated by Rolf Harris and The Veronicas at one point too. I jest of course, Britain is just as bad, we’ve allowed the likes of Glee and even Bob The Builder get the number 1… and Leona Lewis.

Pop-punk is a genre that seems to always sprout new bands. The genre may have lost its appeal a little recently, but the fans are some of the most avid and passionate around. Many a band have come through the ranks and have got a little successful, but have then they have dwindled away and died. The heavyweights of the genre are bands that everyone knows, and I’m not even going to embarrass myself and you by mentioning who these bands are, but they’ve stayed as popular as ever by sticking to something that works for them and by always releasing quality material.

All but three years ago, Portland’s Sparks The Rescue were making pulsating post-hardcore that threatened to make it big in the underground scene. However, when the time came to record their debut full-length ‘Eyes To The Sun’, the band refined their sound to a more pop-rock sound with a little bit of extra kick and fortunately for them, it worked. Now with their sophomore record, ‘Worst Thing I’ve Been Cursed With’, they’ve refined their sound even further in what they hope will bring further acclaim to the band. The question is, will this be a sophomore slump or the comeback of the year?

Perhaps one of the most hyped albums in 2011, the furor surrounding Tyler, The Creator and his rap collective OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All for the newcomers) has been huge since the blogging community and the mainstream magazines such as the NME picked up on the group and hyped them up.

There’s no question that AC/DC are easily one of the biggest and most successful rock bands of our time. Following the release of their sixteenth (yes, sixteenth) full-length studio, 2008′s ‘Black Ice’, the Australian rock quintet set about on a world tour to promote the release. One stop of the tour consisted of three dates in Buenos Aires in December 2009, all of which were recorded on 32 separate HD cameras, and compiled and edited into what is ‘Live At River Plate’.

Post-hardcore is a genre that is full to capacity at this very moment, with every niché filled and all the big name spots already taken there is very little that young bands can do, except prod around the fringes of the genre hoping for a lucky break here or there. Sleeping With Sirens‘ first album, ‘With Ears To See And Eyes To Hear’ was exactly that, they were lapping around the fringes of the genre hoping that someone would take notice of them. Their sophomore record, ‘Let’s Cheers To This’, however, is the real deal, and will surely ensure that the band barge their way in amongst the big players of the genre.

As is said with most post-hardcore and metalcore releases, there isn’t much out nowadays that hasn’t been done before. So, as such, the genre is just generally rehashing the same thing over and over again, and at times potentially to death.

So, what happens when you put the bassist from Bloc Party and singer/guitarist of The Automatic/YourCodeNameIs:Milo in a room and tell them to write an album? A beautiful, grungey, sophomoric expression of hate is amalgamated into twelve tracks of post-rock bliss, entitled ‘Crisis Works’. Hidden under the name Young Legionnaire, Paul Mullen, Gordon Moakes and drummer William Bowerman have dug a hole and filled it with 44 and a half minutes of psychedelic rock and roll goodness that the music industry has been crying out for.

Underground acts Pariso and Kerouac are two bands who are really pushing the UK-swell scene forwards. This 5″ split record comes with a credit card shaped CD to add a bit of novelty value. There’s no novelty needed however when you delve into the fearsome tracks that are on this split. It’s extremely short, coming in at just over seven minutes for both sides, but there isn’t a single second wasted.
